    Rebuild on Altec 19 crossover?

Has anyone rebuilt these crossovers? My high end seems a bit lacking. I am just thinking of replacing stock with updated parts. I don't want to change the speakers harmonics just bring it back to original working condition.

Saying that I am not opposed to a complete rebuild for a second set of crossovers if someone has had good results with an updated design.

    Thanks for your help

Ive never had a 19, but Ive just changed the caps on my valencia and used dynamat extreme on the horns.

Now that the caps have burned in, its made a massive difference, really helped the top end.

The damping has just got rid of that 'honk' you get at certain frequencies.

I used ''auricap'' caps at the reccomendation of a friend.

    Nice web page,

Pity they don't show images of their products, besides the schematics are all common knowledge.

    - Here's the schematic for the model 19s' crossover . This is courtesy of Jeff Markwart and his site .

    - For want of a clearer road-map of which parts work best with your drivers, I would follow Jeffs' recommendations for caps and inductors . ( Yes , that means, building a whole new crossover ) .

    Hi

OK I pulled them out. What should I repalce?
    - I'd replace all the inductors and the caps . I don't have a 1201a network here but I do have the 1209a network, which is closely related. My opinion about the inductors is that they are very mushy sounding . The 2 capacitor types are both PIO ( paper in oil ). In their day they should have been a decent sounding cap. Unfortunately, after 20-30 years these caps are sonically showing their age . The paper/oil combo starts to oxidize . This internal oxidation sets up pretty odd resosances from my experience with this type of cap.

    - I'm sceptical about whether you'll be able to fit all new inductors & caps on the existing network framework. Air Core Inductors should have their central axis turned at 90° angles to each other to reduce mutual inductance. I don't think there is room for that type of layout on the existing N1201 frame .

    - I would build complete new units that live outside the M19 enclosures. I'd put the old crossover units back in place or store them if you think that selling the Model 19s intact is in your future. External crossovers, would mean either extending the speaker wire leads out of the box / or / putting a 4 pole connector on the box ( likely not good for resale value ) .

    - the ( how to's ) of image posting is covered here.

Reference this other thread on Model 19 crossovers for some pics of inductors and an oxidized PIO capacitor .
