LE15A - Look at Ruined Voice Coil

I am in the process of re-surrounding four LE15A's. Looks like three will work out just fine. One is toast. The cone would not move thru it's full excursion. It would bind on one side. I finally decided to remove the cone out of curiosity. I thought I would share some pics with the group.

This first picture shows the basket and cone.

Here's a closeup of the good side of the voice coil. Notice the vertical ribbon wire. I think I finally understand what they mean by ribbon wire and edgewound.

Now, here's the problem side. I'm guessing something was dropped on the cone as the voicecoil form seems to have a compression fold in it. You can see the ribbon-ness of the wire in this picture. I can't complain as the speakers (four le15A's, two 375's and two 075's were a gift ).

My final picture is of the date printed on the inside of the voice coil. I had no idea it was there. It's good to know that you can always rip out the cone to find the date of manufacture.

    Thanks for looking.

Val, lemme check... I think that a friend of mine (PA/pro audio reconer) reconed a pair of these a while back... and one of the leftover old cone assemblies may have still been good, IIRC. New dustcap, spider and surround, and it should be usable, to fix your one bad one there.

If you'd be interested, PM me... I'll check on it. Can't imagine him wanting more than $10 or $15 for it, tops. He's like me... keep EVERYTHING that could be re-used, never throw anything good away...

    Regards,
    Gordon.
