    VOT issue,,space

I have been offered a pair of VOT with JBL 2220A 15" woofers, 511B horns and 802 drivers and the N800D crossovers.

The amp I have to drive them is a Berning EA-230 triode..the room is about 22 x 20 ft with vaulted ceilings,,but what worries me is that my listening chair cannot be more than 8 ft away just about, as well as 8 ft between the huge cabs.

I am willing to get them mainly from curiosity and they are somewhat historical drivers...( i believe ), but what would they bring to the table in my room?

    THanks in advance!

8' is not a comfortable distance, for a horn with 50' throw .....

I've read that they can be great nearfield monitors. Don't know how it can be true by looking at them, but my Sevilles were like that. 4 feet back from the plane and the speakers were 7 feet apart, magic imaging all around. Missing it....

Not much different than a Model 19..and they were beautiful in a living room. I don't think you'll get as much low end out of the 2220A as you would a 416.

    i don't mean to discourage you ..

by ALL means get them ...!

mine are in the garage now ,,5 car garage

    it's not the 511 that's the problem ..it's the bass horn ..

in order to get some decent below 100 hz bass, ya gotta turn it up, so's the 511 is driving you outta the room

or you can hook it up active and boost the sub 100Hz while cutting the HF

    thats what I do....

will take measerements and post later tonight/this weekend...
    I have A7-500s and M19s

I actually have my 19,s inverted ontop of the A7 cabs right now, in a MTM config..... full range to the 19s; 100Hz and lower to the 515b in the A7 cab and a pair of 075 bullets for above 7.5KHz

I like the sound and they get real loud (not harsh at all) w/ about 600W/ch total.... but still very very clear and dynamic at moderate levels....

need to dampen those horns though

This may sound sacrilegous, but has anyone used a modern sub that plays mid's like a Lambda Acoustics or anything like that?

The active route isnt a bad idea I think.

build yourself a set of four LAB subs....

    LAB = Live Audio Board

    You have plenty of room

then you can sweep a 30HZ tone no problem......

I meant to replace the JBL 2220A with the Lambda with copper faraday.

    oh -- sorry

I have used TAD 1601,s in the A7 Cabinets...... depending on vintage of the cabinets you may or may not need to build an additional baffle board to make this work...

you may or may not 'like' them like that -- I like the Altec 515b or 416b better than the TAD in those particular boxes, the TADs wern't bad, per say, but the Altecs were better....

my room is about 17' X 27' x 7' 5/8" tall, the stack is on the short wall.... my stereo is more set up for dancing than anything else, but I do have a couch on the far wall.....

about 5'-7' between the cabinets, depending on how I have the room set up....

you sound like my wife... the cabinets aren't HUGE they are 'right sized'...

it is, however a workout to rearrange the room......
