JBL K2 S9500 vs JBL StudioMonitors

How does the K2 compare versus the big studiomonitors?
Does the K2 roll of significant at 14khz?

Would a subwoofer with the 2245 match the speed of the K2?

I heard both K2s this past January at CES, and got the inside scoop.

They're tuned for the Japanese market, and have excellent high frequency extension. As I recall, they're "flat" until 50 kHz (or was it 100?). Way beyond what I can hear.

Both models are tuned with bass rolloff (again for the Japanese market), but they sounded surprisingly deep in the listening room. They didn't really need a sub for most applications.

That said, the 2245 or 2242 would be a great match. As long as they're rolled off low enough, the speed of the drivers should be no problem with the K2.

Next door to the K2 room was the "Hurcules" room. Amazing. Four 2242s. Five sets of 10" mid pairs. Five "high packs" from the K2 5800. 7,200 watts. An amazing system. The dynamic range was beyond my abilities. And at no time did the 2242s sound slow or muddy.

    Jon,

We have been debating the merits of various power amps for bass in another thread. (Amp for bass driver)

Do you recall what they were using for the demo?

The Hucules room featured JBL's own amps, crossovers and EQ. The Synthesis line, I believe. It was Levinson in the K2 room. The 5800s were bi-amped, but the source material didn't have enough bass content to push them. The 9800s used a larger ML amp with the built-in passive K2 x-over, and sounded great with the contemporary, semi-electric jazz they played.

Don McRitchie was there with me (Hi Don. I hope you're well. It's great that the forums are up again!), and he was also surprised by the quality and extension of the bass. I didn't see any EQ in the path, and there weren't any visible "tricks" in the rectangular room.

Don't ask for the model numbers of the amps though. I didn't note them. I do remember that the JBL amps were 800W apiece, if that helps.

Actually, it was the large PMC monitors with Bryston amps that sounded the best at the show to my ears. They don't have the dynamic range of the JBLs, but the dome mids were fantastic for female vocals, and the transmission-line woofers were tight and well balanced. They were on the open show floor, so I can't exactly A/B the systems. It was the accuracy of the mids that most impressed me.

...But don't think I'd wheel the K2 9800s out to the curb though. I've got just the spot for them...

    Bryston

Yeah those bryston amps are some badass amplifiers! Quick and clean, never harsh! They are noted for their bass and their midrange fidelity!

Thats what Im putting on my full range this winter!

    Regarding the K2 s9500,
the upper freq range is rather limited..

    -24db at 21000hz
starts to roll off at 12500hz

that is not really OK with me..

    Hello Niklas,

    I think Jon is talking about the newer K2-S5800 dual 12-inch 3-way and the K2-S9800 15-inch 3-way systems instead of the older K2-S9500 dual 14-inch 2-way and K2-S7500 14-inch 2-way.

    Yeah, I was confused
K2 this and K2 that with different strings of numbers
    Whatever happened to A, B, and C
The alphabet, or Mk II, Mk III, etc. must be bad for Marketing

"Would a subwoofer with the 2245 match the speed of the K2?"

Have you heard Nerik's quad 2242H's?
I'm going to agree with G.T. in reference to the 2242H - "those things aren't even of this planet!"

BTW, I think you asked about adding mass to the 2242H? I passed that by G.T. quite awhile ago because it didn't look so good on paper after I did the math. He confirmed that it would be ill-advised and said they had actually tried it to see what would happen. It is the way it is, and that is pretty much current SOTA. The power handling is mind numbing and the sloped response makes it so nice to stuff in a typical room
