LAB subwoofers

has anyone ever heard them, I am hearing very good things from a guy here in CO that has built himself 12 of them (size is not an issue for him -- large mobile applications...) but he swears by them

they are folded horn loaded with the eminence LAB spec 12" subwoofer x2

supposedly if you have the room to have two per side they can go to 27hz (but they like to eat 2000W each cabinet)

Indoors, in a domestic situration they may not be optimal.... unless you have a very large venue.

When I went to the Midwest Audio Fest a member of the Chicago Horn club brought one with a pair of Altec VOT's. Set-up they were a good match and the Lab sounded pretty good. At one time during the show they let the Lab show what it could do and MY GOD the building walls were shaking. Try over on the AA High Efficiency forum and ping the Club. I am sure someone will step forward to help answer your questions.

agghhhh yes the LAB 12.... pretty much its violent. I would actually build a front loaded ported box if you want to use those drivers in a home situation. In the right horn loaded box you can reach SPL levels way beyond anything you can imagine. I have seen them play flat to 16Hz in certian boxes. I hate to say it but just one double 12 will kill any two double 18's JBL ever made. From what I heard movie theaters are starting to use them. The biggest help would be the guys at prosoundweb.com they are all nuts lol

It is fairly potent, but only really so in the correct large box.

As for the LAB forum, I have beena visitor for a long time, and it can be quite good for some specific gear questions for live audio use.

The Lab Horn, designed by Tom Danley, demonstrates the potential of horn loading even when a pair of moderately priced 12” drivers is used. The example referenced here, exhibits work at the level of a professional cabinetmaker. Only via such DIY efforts is this level of quality achievable at a reasonable price.

While there are few large format drivers designed for use in a horn, here are two that win the performance contest with a 2:1 plus margin to spare (if price in not a primary consideration).

Note that the LAB horn was designed to work in arrays of four or more horns with a high pass (infrasonic) filter set at 35 Hz to protect the drivers. See Eminence [1] and Precision Devices [2]&[3] sites for driver details. The table below provides a comparrison between drivers [1] and [2].

Let's not say it. Let's see a comparison between one of these 12" driver sets and a pair of 4645C's. Price, performance, real estate cost, etc.

you can pick up a lab12 driver for like $135 and the cabinet wont cost much to build if you do it yourself. hell i would take them over a servodrive basstech-7
