I've used the search forums feature but did not find enough information to build an exact reproduction of a B460. Can anyone help with detailed information?
Has any member tried to reproduce one? Does anyone know if the original design can be improved on. I'm planning to use a 2242H in this project, is this speaker the best choice for the application?

I've yet to see plans for an exact replica of the B460. Speaking for myself, (I've owned my B460 about 3 years) I can't imagine the design being much better, though some of the other esteemed forum members may not agree... I can tell you that the B460, in conjunction with the BX63 crossover and a quality amplifier with ample power, will provide tremendously deep, clean, powerful bass. (See my thread "weighing in on a few issues, L220 and B460"). I do know that the B460 uses the 2245H Low frequency driver, which is a professional series driver. I am unsure which one the 2242H is, though I believe I have heard of it. The B460 enclosure is 8 cubic foot in volume, and is ported with three side-firing vents. You can find two specification sheets in the JBL library that describe the B460. Good luck with your project!

John, thanks for taking the time to provide detailed information from your B460.
I've built two pairs of subs using 2245H's based on the first link from Zilch's post above to the 1983 Audio magazine article. Both times I built the 12 cubic foot cabinet tuned to 22Hz. For the first pair I was able to find cardboard tubing from a manufacturer equal in diameter to what's required in the article for the ports. For the second pair, I wasn't able to find the round tubes again, so I made the ports square, out of 3/4" MDF with the same area as the round tube. I could hear no difference between the two.
The main improvement that anyone can make on a project that sometimes the manufacturer can't afford to do is to use an aweful lot of bracing to tie all the walls of the cabinet together and use very thick walls. I used 1.5" for the front baffles, but I have heard of others using even thicker walls.
Both pairs of my subs were designed to be flush mounted in the walls, so I just sanded the cabinets smooth, rounded the corners, and painted them black. Absolutely in no way are they things of beauty like the B460, but they are sonic equivalents and reach even deeper into the infrasonic notes on recordings. They can be downright spooky, because you hear things occasionally that the studio didn't know about and didn't remove, like HVAC systems starting, singers gently bumping a mic stand, etc. These things are so low that most studio monitors wouldn't reproduce them.
I haven't listened to all the subs out there, or even most of them, but I have heard some very expensive subs and I think the JBL design using the 2245H bettered all of them in tightness, "quickness", and sheer low frequency power.
Good luck on your project. Once you have that kind of low end, there's no going back. I think you'll love it. And if you come up with the plans to replicate the B460, please let us all know and show us some pictures!!

Not a B460 enclosure, but a good thread comparing the 2242/2245 in similiar situations. I myself have a 2242 in that cabinet size and have only installed the driver in cabinet and played straight to get the sonic signature so far.
This weekend I plan to incorporate it in my system with a sub plate amp.
What I can tell you is that pipe organ music comes alive and gets real scary. I hear more things rattling in my house than I thought were loose.
