altec 601-8b duplexspeakers

hi people just new to this and i was wondering if anybody has any information on home enclosures built for altec lansing 601-8b and also i would like to know what year or era they were built. thank you. ken.

Hi Ken

Here on page 10 of the 1954 Altec Home Catalog you can see your speaker type existed back in 1954 . To get an idea of the range of enclosure sizes that Altec recommended look at page 14 . 1954 predates Thiele & Smalls' work on defining relevant transducer parameters for use in tuning speakers in boxes. As such, I guess Altecs approach, as suggested on this page, is that for more bass you go up in box size. As a guess, 3 to 4 cu ft is where I'd start. That implies the 609 enclosure ( 4 cu ft ) .
- A 1960s version of your speaker can be seen on page 9 of the 1963 PRO catalog .
- An early 1970s' version of your speaker is viewable on page 24 of the 1971 Altec Home Catalog .
- A mid 1970s' version of your speaker can be seen on page 14 of the 1975 Altec Home catalog .

I've never seen published TS parameters for the 601 duplex but I'd be inclined to treat it as a close cousin to the 414 woofer ( it has some published TS parameters ) .

To go the more empirical route for box sizing , look through the Altec Plans contained in the Altec Library . If you look at the
1968 Enclosure Guide , on page 4 you can see in "Table III" that a port size of 25 square inches is suggested for a 4 cu ft box when using a woofer that has a 39 hz Resonant Frequency ( a 601-8D in this case ) .

Hi Earl,
thanks for the very good information about the altec 601. It looks like then you are a pro. I have do the 4 cu ft 609 enclosure, but it missing the lower frequency because the enclosures is closed. My english is very bad and i don`t understand the "Table III" in 1968 Enclosure Guide on page 4! I have looked in a dictionary but it doesn`t help. Can you help me?

Hello Aronier,

- Here's how I interpret the suggested use of this tuning guide, once a 4 cu ft enclosure has been chosen to house the 601-8D .

- As you can see, the vertical red line intersecting of the 39 hz curve, suggests a simple hole ( cut into the 3/4" plywood ) that is slightly smaller than 4" x 6" ,
( or something else equalling 23.6 sq. inches ) .

I have one more question, what means in table I. "Mounting hole diameter" and "bolt circle diameter" and what do you think is better square or circle and front or rear opening?

- Here's another illustration that I hope transmits across any language barrier .

- In my opinion ; It doesn't matter ( whatever looks nicer ). The important thing is maintaining the proper area ( square inches or square meters ).

and front or rear opening?

- I prefer front ports . In the front, they can't get any interference from the wall ( For Instance; if the box is placed too close to the back wall )





ps ; obviously the drawing is for a 15" speaker / and not a 12" speaker .
