How to determine box tuning point ?

How does one determine the tuning point of a cabinet without these newer software programs ? I would assume it is based on the combination of port area and cabinet volume ? I am new at box theory, I am more of a circuit guy. Any links to good theory primers ?

    Enclosure Tuning: Lv = (Sv / (3.7E-4 * Vb * Fb^2)) - (0.83 * SQRT(Sv))
Vb enclosure volume in cubic feet
    Fb enclosure tuning in Hertz
Sv port area in square inches
    Lv duct length in inches
