Need help with center speaker

i was wanting to add a center speaker to my system.

any advice on what to do?

i am using a pair of JBL 4311's and a MAC 1700.

any information/opinions at all would be greatly appreciated.

If you get a 4310 or EARLY model L100 (with the LE20 tweeter- the one with the ROUND flange), then they're completely shielded (all alnico magnets... alnico "pot" magnets are inherently shielded). Great for center channel use, as long as you can fit 'em in...

Otherwise, an L77 would also work...

So, on what basis might we presume a TiK center to be an appropriate sonic companion to 4311 mains?

The best front end is having 3 identical speakers.

Only to a certain extent. I definately got CRT color aberations when I set my Mits 45" table top on my center speaker that had two 130As, an LE175, and an 075. Furthermore, the speakers were intentionally set low in the cabinet to afford as much space as possible.

I suggest you mock up a baffleboard and place it where it will end up relative to the TV and check for color aberation before going to the trouble to build the cabinets.

That's why I've decided to build a Center speaker using at least the same MF and HF as my L100's. Since there is not much LF program in Center Channel the timbre matches the front speakers very well. For that same reason I've used the same L100's XOVERs (N100, which only filters HF and MF and uses LF transducer as a full range). The idea is that any difference in sound between different LF transducers would not be noticeable due to difference in program material.

For the LF I used a pair of shielded Dayton 5,25" speakers. Before decision to use LE-26 as HF (could have been LE-25, but in my case the L100s have L-26s replacing original LE-25s, so I have all 3 identical) I have tested interference to CRT and it was not noticeable. I would go for a LE-20 (alnico) instead if I had a problem. Same LE-5-2 transducer was used, copying L100's inner chamber for MF.

The picture is not great (speaker under TV) it looks better in real world (tried to use venner similar to L100) and it sounds great, fitting well between my front L100s.
