    Model14 speakers

I bought a pair of Altec Model14 speakers but the 12inch base speakers were not in the cabinets. What model of speaker is supposed to be in there? Also I have a pair of Altecs 418-8h speakers in mint condition, what are they worth? Im thinking about selling them. Thanks....Mark

    Mark,

The Model 14 used a proprietary woofer - it was not a stock model placed into that system, as was often done with, say, the 414.

If you are interested in getting a pair, contact me directly, and I will see if I can find some for you.

As Todd said, the woofer was only used in the #14 ,15 and 9862. Even though it was a 12" woofer, the frame was 13" in diameter with a large flange and a larger baffle hole. The closest regular woofer was the 3124 which has a lower frequency potential and efficiency to the 414 that Todd noted. If you wish to install either of these, or any other regular 12" for that matter, you will have to close the hole in some. We once had to do this when someone stole the woofers out of a pair of 9862s. I made strips of 1/8" X 3/4" fir and nailed/glued then round and round inside the baffle hole until it was the right size. The Iconic 1234-8 is a direct equivilent to the 3124 and would work also. Hi Mark,

I thought that I knew where there were some of the Model 14 woofers still laying around, but, alas, they're gone...

Jim's right - go with the Iconic 1234-8. It's the closest you'll get. You'll need to either use the method he described to change the hole size or build a wooden "washer" to mount it in your cabinets. This can be done in a very aesthetically pleasing way.
