    Side by side, or vertical

My need for more projects has got me thinking about a concept.I have had 4430s and liked them.I built a 4430 pretender with LE14As (true crossover for the top, LF crossover with measurements to match impedance and frequency to the LE14A) I have nine, yes, LE14As as spares.I would like to build a 4435 version. Is it better to mount them in the cabinets vertically or horizontally.I have yet to see/hear a 2235 sound any better than an LE14A mounted in an appropriate cabinet.

If you are crossing over the helper woofer at the same frequency as the 4435 it doesn't matter.

If you go full range go vertical. Look at the polars on a dual 15" cinema box like the 4638/4648.

I would like to simply add a helper woofer in a new cabinet that will only play up to 80Hz or so and mount them vertically IF that works in y'alls eyes.

@ 80 Hz sure I have my HT active mains stacked right on top of B360 clones. You don't have to stack them you can place them like any other sub if that placement is an issue. I always put my subs in "close" proximity to the mains.

Very nice. I want to put 2 LE14As in the same box vertically oriented and cross the bottom woofer at 80Hz while the one above it plays full up to the HF crossover. Like a vertical 4435.I like your mains. What horn and driver handles you HF?It looks like a DIY 3-way (not from an aesthetic standpoint, of course) and I would be interested in that build if you have a thread covering it.

    Hello

I don't have a dedicated build thread. The basic build goes back to a long time ago to about 2004 or so??? JBL had a huge Tent Sale and that's what drove the original system. Free shipping, they were essentially giving it away!! Based on a scaled down Drew's Clues system.

    https://www.audioheritage.org/html/p...rews-clues.htm

I will post an original photo from that time. That had Le-14A subs, 2035's, 2122's and 2416's on 2344A's. Center was an 811C clone.

It has evolved over time going to 2426's on the 2344's then changing out the 2122's to 2123's and 2035's to E-145's Then 2435's on the PTH1010's

    Now it's 2235's, E-145's, 2123's and 2453SL's on PTH1010's.

The crossovers are 24dB L/R actives with Urei 539 for EQ and SP12 for the B360's and BX-63A. CD compensation is passive on the 2453Sl's.

    Rob

    Is it final????

I want two LE14s in the same cabinet, vertically oriented with 2344/2426/5 on top.

Should work you just have to work out the hinge point on the LF side for the "helper" woofer. The LE-14's potentially have better LF extension than the 2234's depending on box volume and tuning.

    This passive or active??

I already have the passives built and installed and the helper just gets a 1st order coil, BUT, technology these days is so advanced that I'm not opposed to DSP through Mini DSP. To that subject, I have purchased a Wiim Pro and listen to music on Tidal and Qobuz. Bit PERFECT. I started playing music on the radio in 1971. Our monitor was a 12 inch school PA speaker. As I progressed in my career of 35 years, the monitors and source material got better.I feel I'm living in a miracle age. My music is played back at master tape quality, bit perfect...and my JBL two-way is the child of all the help I have gotten here and on AK. I could not be more grateful. I feel as though I could only do better with small improvements. Dual LE14s in a vertical stack with 2344/2426 on top.I have 2235s here and have no use for them. The LE14s do all the 2235s do in a smaller cab. I get 31Hz in 4cu.ft.
