Build idea: HLA4895 + Direct Radiating Subs

Contemplating a new build. I miss my horn setup I had a number of years ago. I have been looking at some options and stumbled on the HLA4895.

The HLA4895 is a three-way setup consisting of the following components:

14" LF unit 2254J (which can run from 120-297Hz). It can be run lower when used in a LF-reinforced array (like when 6 of the 4895s are stacked together), but maybe in a home listening environment this can be extended down a bit with DSP and EQ.

10" MF unit 2251J 297Hz - 1.14 kHz.

4" HF unit 2451SL 1.14 kHz - 18 kHz.

The interesting thing about these is that they can seemingly be removed from their exoskeleton to reduce most of the bulk. Make no mistake, it's still a big horn, but might be more manageable.

For 20-120Hz, I'd need to design something else. Likely a sealed direct radiating stereo pair. I haven't got that far yet.

The system is going to need to be 4-way active with 4 amps and a crossover. Fortunately, JBL also makes a XO unit (DSC280) that can also be found on the used market. These have the filters for the LF, MF and HF components of the HLA4895. They have gain recommendations for a number of tour amps, but I'd want to use perhaps a 8-channel ATI amplifier or two 4-channel amplifiers (2 channels bridged for the LF unit and separate sub amps).

Just doing some thought-experiments here.

I think it could make a pretty nice system, especially if I can find a pair that are from a rental company or something. I'm trying to get the actual measurements of the array. The good thing is that it can be field-disassembled (presumably to allow touring outfits to replace drives, troubleshoot etc.).

The HLAs were designed pretty specifically for long throw ( think 100+ feet ) applications. I've used them over the years for large outdoor events and they did the job but were not something I'd want to listen to in my living room or even a small club. A hockey arena or an open field they work fine in.

Hello, i am using HLA@Home since several years so any questions let me know. They work very well in the sweet spot and dont produce to much room interaction like many other speakers above 200Hz. alu frame is 30KG, horn with drivers 60kg
