    Pieceing together a JBL 4350 build in Australia

    Hi All

    After selling my Factory 4350A's about a year ago I ended up purchasing an empty pair of 4350 clone cabinets at an auction. Also purchased at the auction were 3x pairs of 2235H's, 1x pair 2231As and a pair of 2450SL with, I think, 2332 horns. I picked up a fair bit of other interesting JBL gear but these are the only drivers pertinent to this proposed build.

    Given the cabinets aren't factory I have no problem trying alternate drivers in this system. Obviously the 2235H's will come in handy and I will continue to use the 2202 mid-bass unit but I am also wanting to use the 2450SL in place of the horns. A few questions arise from this, how can I get the 2311 to mount on the 1.5" driver? I can't see any factory adapters or aftermarket varieties that can achieve this. If I can't use the 2311 I may consider fitting the 2332 horn into the cabinet. Thoughts on this?

    Perfect world I would want to drive these completely passive, active 4 or 3-way is completely out of the question and is of no interest. I have a Bryston 10B and a Deqx so I am happy to biamp as done in the legacy system. I assume some crossover work would need to be done for the 2450SL's to blend seamlessly. Any guidance on this?

    Worst case I will just buy a pair of 2440/2441/2445 if this is all too complicated for me.

    Hello Kelossus, a company here in the states sell the adaptor needed for the 1.5” to 2”. The company’s name is US Speaker. It is made by P Audio which you may be able to find a distributor by you.
    The part no. Is PC 5038 and sells for $39.95. Hope this helps and good luck

    Do you have a lathe? Are you into fabrication?

    I cut a pair of 2307’s at the point where the throat was just under 1.5” and welded a new flanges on them for 2450SL’s.

    I thought I posted a pic or two but don’t recall where.

    The easiest route would be regular old 2450’s on the 2311. Light and the same package size of the old 2440-41’s.

    Is this a crazy idea? Flipping the speakers 90 degrees and using the other side to mount the 2332?

    The biggest issue I had with the 4350's was them being too close together so rotating them would help move them a little further apart.

    Hi, Surely, this is what I did with my 2450, I installed the 2451 dia because I much prefer the aquapla's diaphragm.
    JBL2450, 2450SL or 2451 have the same motor.

    If I got a 2445/2446 and put a 16 ohm SL diaphragm in it, would I need to change the original 4355 crossover to accommodate for it?

    A passive crossover is made for specific drivers and in addition the impedance does not match, the result will not be optimal. IMHO I would keep the 2450SL which is a great driver and look for a good DSP to replace the old passive crossover.

    To keep this simple I think I will keep the speakers as close to original as possible. If I source a pair of 2450 with the 2" exit and install 2441 diaphragms, will I need to make any changes to the stock 4355 network?

    Also, as I intend to use the cabinets flipped 90 degrees would mounting the drivers in a vertical line above the mid-bass be the way to go?

    The 2450 driver with a D16R2441 diaphragm should perform just like the original 2441.

    I doubt you could hear any difference with the 2405 on the side verses the top on a 4355. The 2405 just augments the 2441. In the 4350 where the 2440 has no output above about 9KHz, and the 2405 is on hard, maybe.

    Thanks mate, I just figured if I were going to drill new mounting holes for the drivers I might vertically align them when the cabinets are rotated.

    Hi Barry,

    Tell me did I miss something? If I go to the specs for the 4355, the drivers are 8 ohms, no?

    I have never seen an 8 Ohm 2441. I have always assumed that they didn’t exist. I could very well be wrong! I suppose it deserves a look.

    JBL never made an 8 ohm 2441 diaphragm that I'm aware of. The closest one could get is the Radian clone 8 ohm version which actually sounds better the original JBL if you don't need every last bit of HF extension. I don't know why an 8 ohm would be beneficial when making a 4350 clone however, it would just require a lot more reinvention of any passive crossover and be a non-issue if you were tri-amping.
