Pieceing together a JBL 4350 build in Australia

Hi All

After selling my Factory 4350A's about a year ago I ended up purchasing an empty pair of 4350 clone cabinets at an auction. Also purchased at the auction were 3x pairs of 2235H's, 1x pair 2231As and a pair of 2450SL with, I think, 2332 horns. I picked up a fair bit of other interesting JBL gear but these are the only drivers pertinent to this proposed build.

Given the cabinets aren't factory I have no problem trying alternate drivers in this system. Obviously the 2235H's will come in handy and I will continue to use the 2202 mid-bass unit but I am also wanting to use the 2450SL in place of the horns. A few questions arise from this, how can I get the 2311 to mount on the 1.5" driver? I can't see any factory adapters or aftermarket varieties that can achieve this. If I can't use the 2311 I may consider fitting the 2332 horn into the cabinet. Thoughts on this?

Perfect world I would want to drive these completely passive, active 4 or 3-way is completely out of the question and is of no interest. I have a Bryston 10B and a Deqx so I am happy to biamp as done in the legacy system. I assume some crossover work would need to be done for the 2450SL's to blend seamlessly. Any guidance on this?

Worst case I will just buy a pair of 2440/2441/2445 if this is all too complicated for me.

Hello Kelossus, a company here in the states sell the adaptor needed for the 1.5” to 2”. The company’s name is US Speaker. It is made by P Audio which you may be able to find a distributor by you.

I cut a pair of 2307’s at the point where the throat was just under 1.5” and welded a new flanges on them for 2450SL’s.

I thought I posted a pic or two but don’t recall where.

The easiest route would be regular old 2450’s on the 2311. Light and the same package size of the old 2440-41’s.

Hi, Surely, this is what I did with my 2450, I installed the 2451 dia because I much prefer the aquapla's diaphragm.
JBL2450, 2450SL or 2451 have the same motor.

Is this a crazy idea? Flipping the speakers 90 degrees and using the other side to mount the 2332?

The biggest issue I had with the 4350's was them being too close together so rotating them would help move them a little further apart.

Would using the Selenium HL14-50N horn instead of the 2311 be considered an improvement? If I were to use it would it require any crossover changes?

All multi way speakers interfere with each other to some degree at and near the crossover frequencies, it's simply the natural result of the same sound being produced by two sources in two different places in space and/or time. Its actually better to make this interference occur in space vertically rather than horizontally as our ears are arranged on the horizontal plane and much more sensitive to comb filters on that plane. Flipping the speakers 90 degrees and arranging the mid and high / super high components is an improvement.

The horn change is unlikely to be a change for better or worse, there just isn't enough horn there to make a noticeable difference. The only way to know if crossover changes are needed anytime you make changes to a speaker design is to measure the finished design.

There will be a bit of a difference but depending on where and how much there is it may not matter.

The CD in that system is run through a narrow range bandpass filter. That works in you favor as the are all typically designed to have smooth response through that part of the spectrum.

The horn is non CD so no horn compensation to worry about.

Asside from a change in level or a potential tilt in the response I would think you should be OK.

You should have more than enough trim in the pots to compensate for any changes.

The only way to know for sure would be to actually measure with the horn mounted to your baffle board for the original vs the new diaprhram.

Non coated vs coated should be fine. Radian vs JBL ????? I have never used them so no measurements I have to compare the differences.

That said I would expect them to be very similar to the JBL's as used in this system. JMHO

I would use a drop of the Moyen adhesive from a recone kit. I’ve fixed cut’s and tears in surrounds both cloth and foam with it. Kept thin it is plenty flexible and durable.

Finding some there in AU might be a trick but some reconer has to have some.

Got the boxes. That is also 6x 2235H brand new in the box.

I have everything besides the 2450 compression drivers. I stupidly bought the 2450SL only to find out they are a 1.5" exit.

I just noticed a tiny hole in the surround of my 2202 driver. Can you patch this in a way that will not degrade performance a possibility? Or am I looking at a recone or replacement driver?
