My NOS C8R2235 kits also have that number printed on them, but also white handwritten numbers including (apparently) the weight.

Also I notice that the one I un-boxed today still has supple & stretchy foam on the surround, I hope that is a result of being stored in an air-conditioned dry and dark closet.

Absolutely. I removed a 2234 from my 4435s and the number 50320 was hidden by the binding post.

I always assumed the handwritten numbers reflected the DCR among other things, the weight is possible also.

I’ve found a new couple on sale and still have doubts if the basket without serial numbers is a genuine 2235 or maybe another 140.
    can you help? Thanks!!!

I see the terminals on the spoke instead of between them so a different casting, but IIRC they did change the 2235H/136H casting through production so I might be of no help.

Yes, one has squared terminals while the other ones are rounded. But it’s not the first time i notice this.
    anyway, thanks for your help

Can't really help because the only real way to tell the difference is to physically measure the height of the ferrite magnet.

The "E" series magnet is 1/8" taller//higher >> which is never visible in pictures.

The extra magnet produces 1.35 Tm in the gap when a 2235 cone kit is dropped in ( versus , the 1.2 Tm in the gap from the 2225/2235 magnet .

I would just buy that pair assuming the price ( & condition of items ) are all good.

The extra magnet simply produces more midrange output ( say above 300hz , which can be easily dealt with if necessary by using a larger sized inductor when designing crossovers.

price is not a bargain at all but i’m pretty tired of “waiting for Godot”.
many thanks for your help. If the only difference is the one reported i don’t think it will be day and night.

    Hi EarlK,

you say that the E series ferrite magnets are 1/8" thicker than the 2225/2235/2234 magnets. This is what I've learned in this forum for several times. Do you also know how thick both are in inches or millimeters? This might help anyone to discern.

    Best regards!

Well, I would measure an E140 for you >> but I can't get the protective rubber boot off the ferrite slug ( man that rubber-boot is rock-hard! ).

I'll see if I can retrieve this info from other threads found on this forum. I know that members subwoof and 4313B talked about this topic in the far past.

Clearly the problem with making a "type" determination via the measurement approach, is getting actual access to the ferrite slug ( magnet ) for measurement purposes.

PS; OK, that was a quick search.

From This thread !!( that has both subwoof + 4313B yakking )

Here's my post from the previous forum:

The 1.35 T*m assembly (E140 for example) uses the 7/8" thick magnet and the 0.280" top plate.

The 1.20 T*m assembly (2235H for example) uses the 3/4" thick magnet and the 0.280" top plate.

The 1.15 T*m assembly (2220H for example) uses the 3/4" thick magnet and the 0.350" top plate.

The 0.95 T*m assembly (2215H for example) uses the 7/8" thick magnet and the 0.600" top plate.

Thanks a lot for this useful information, EarlK !

What I still don't get is why the higher 1.35 T flux of the E baskets only affects the mids if reconed with a, say, C8R2235. I would have expected increased overall sensitivity in comparison with a genuine 2235.

    Best regards!

    Kay,

Take for example the E140. What is the E140? Basically a boosted 2205 optimized for MI. The Alu dust cap and stronger motor gives the E140 increased mid response the 2205 doesn't have. The latter has response up to 1khz whereas the E140 is rated up to 2.5khz. This is where the influence of stronger motor/Alu dustcap happens, i.e. in the mid.

The 2205H has sensitivity 97 db and E140 100 db. But if you compare how they got these numbers its revealing: for 2205 in the 100-500hz range and for E140 its taken 500-2500hz! The latter range for a 15" bass driver is insane, but marketing is king, you have to show the higher number the better in MI...

I'll bet my shirt anytime the E140 will never do 100 db sensitivity in the bass range with vented box, it will do no better than the 2205 (maybe a bit worst), and BOTH are even unlikely to do 97 db at VLF. The overall sensitivity is not increased, the mid one is.

Now transpose the above, with necessary adaptations, to your E driver vs 2235 issue and i think you should understand.
