Altec GPA 515 LF 16 ohm new magnet

    Hello all!

I have one GPA 515 LF 16ohm (Ferrite magnet) where the backplate and following polepiece has come loose.
The driver has probably been dropped to the floor some time...

So I am searching for new magnet and recone kit for this driver.
I have sent four requests to Greatplainsaudio, but no answer...
I have also tried searching for used driver but no luck so far.
Also seems like none of the other GPA/Altec share the same magnet as the 515 LF.

Maybe some of you guys can help?

    Best regards
    oks

    Hi oks,

WOW, this is really sad news. The fact that Great Plains Audio doesn't answer/reply makes it only worst... Unfortunately i can't help you.

I thought you purchased the drivers not long ago?

    For the record
These are not a new buy from Great Plains Audio, they are some years old, but not been used.
    So no warranty or anything.
I have 3 that is ok, it`s just the last one with problems.

I hope to get contact with Great Plains Audio to maybe buy the parts I need.

Seems like new it`s only the Alnico version of 515 that is made.

The problem ( as seen in your pic ) is that the glue bond holding the pole piece has failed ( & then the pole piece shifted over towards the top plate > closing the VC gap > + then pinching the VC ).

That's a fixable problem ( most likely not by you but by a professional speaker manufacturer ).
    - On some older Altecs that pole piece was bolted in place .

I'd suggest that you give SEAS a call ( provide lots of pics ). Really ( IMHO ) GPA should pay all of the costs charged by SEAS.

You don't need a new magnet // the one you have simply needs to be glued//bolted back into place ( after the pole piece is re-centered ) and the cone kit realigned ( assuming it's not damaged ) .

    Thanks for your input Earl!

I have just sent an email to Seas if they can help.
I can not ask GPA to pay for this, I don`t now how it has been broken.
I just bought four 515 cheap and hoped for the best that it could be repaired.
Three are now ok, so not so bad anyway
    Recone I can do myself.
Both the coil and suspension is broken.

    Ahhh OK, My Mistake.

I had thought that you were the original purchaser of new 515's from GPA.

Best of luck with your repair.

    oks,

RE Recone I can do myself.

Are you implying that original 515 recones are available? Or you have aftermarket recone in mind?

Pretty good never give up cartoon, lol. So right now you are the two hands on the bird's neck not willing to be eaten up yet...

Seems like reconingspeakers still have recone kits from GPA.

    https://reconingspeakers.com/product...t-16-ohm-copy/
    https://reconingspeakers.com/product...ne-kit-16-ohm/

Don`t now which one of them that is correct...
Won`t order before I know the driver can be fixed.

I guess they just don't want to get involved.

Anyways, GOOGLE Car Engine Cylinder-Sleeve Extractor Set ( to get an idea of the contraption needed to extract that central pole piece ) .

    Walmart USA, Cylinder Liner Puller

This might give you an idea that this type of repair is possible for anyone who is mechanically inclined.

Yes, do also think Seas just don`t want to be involved.
    Can understand that.

I have done a lot of thinking how to fix.
The biggest issue I think is getting it back together and get the gap correct.
    But thanks for input!

At the end I actually got response from Bill at GPA.
    Maybe some sollution will come

    Oks,

Read this "Effects of Loss of Magnetism" thread!!

You'll then see that you should contact LHF member "Flodstroem" to find out if you can employ him to fix your GPA 515 ( with the bad top-plate ) .
