What is the xdamage of JBL drivers (2226/2227) ?

I am working on a front loaded horn. I would like to design the front chamber so that the bobin hits the magnet before the cone hits the wood.

    Any help appreciated.

    XMAX of 2226 is 7.62, 2227 is 5.08. XMECH is 40mm for 2226 and 50mm for 2227

It appears so from the specs. You can google xmech for both and the JBL spec sheet comes up. You can also google jbl pro service thiel small parameters and the link comes up for the list for most drivers. It's that one that disappeared a while ago.

    Hi Marten,

RE: "(2226/2227) I am working on a front loaded horn."

I never saw the 2226 being specified by JBL for horn loading. Drivers suitable for horn are usually identified and/or used as such by JBL. Another good reason 2226 isn't really proper is driver Qts too high at 0.31.

On the other hand the 2227 is specified by JBL for horn use having Qts of 0.21.

This can be verified in both drivers spec sheet regarding intended applications, also in a more detailed way in JBL Tech Note V. 1 # 22 (applications and summary sections).

BTW drivers with low Qts being suitable for horn loading is moreover explained in Eargle's Handbook of Sound System Design p. 122, as well as in D.B. Keele's paper "Low-Frequency Horn Design Using Thiele-Small Driver Parameters"

Hopefully the above will guide you in the choice of driver for your project. Regards,

    Richard

I am doing a rework on an old project. It is a parabolic horn more like a quarter wave pipe than a hyperbolic horn. On the last page you will find old pictures. https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subw...orn-built.html

I believe there was a period where JBL was using the 2226 (definitely the 2225) in the 4550BKA and 4560BKA cabinets in their 4672 and 4674 systems. The 2227 was a relatively short-lived driver but definitely designed to be used in horn loaded cabinets. I seem to recall it coming out after the 4550BKA and 4560BKA were long gone.

One more tidbit, 2227 is too deep to fit in the 4550’s. The rear plate of the motor rests against the back cover of the cabinet restricting the motor vents.

If we knew what the hell we were doing, we wouldn't call it research would we.

    Hello Barry

Does it have a deeper frame and cone like say an E-145 with the extender ring vs standard frame?? Deeper cone also like an E-145?? Is it a supped up E-145 power wise??

    I have never seen one.

    HI Rob;

The 2227 uses the 2242 motor assembly. It has a .5" or 13mm top plate and the pole piece / back cap is deeper for more coil travel. The the 2206 2226 2241 top plate is .375" or 10mm.

I think the basket is the same as the 2226. It has no spacers or anything like that. I think it's all in the back half.

I will unbox one and have a look tomorrow after work. It's been a while since I ogled one.

    Barry.

    Hi Sguttag,

RE I believe there was a period where JBL was using the 2226 (definitely the 2225) in the 4550BKA and 4560BKA cabinets.

Thanks for the input. Up to this day i've never seen the 2225 nor 2226 specified or used by JBL in the above cabs. One good reason for this is driver larger Xmax and the real possibility of the cone striking the horn's throat during longer excursions, as explained in the last document pictured.

The 2225 is specified by JBL for horn loading as indicated in one pic (somewhat surprisingly though), but its not mentioned for those two cabs. According to a previous search i made, these cabs seem to have been removed from the catalogue at about the same time the 2225 was introduced, early 1982. However, the 4560 cab continued its career a little longer in the form of 4662A/4663A, but previously in late 70s it had no "A" and different woofer (K130).

No doubt guys may have tried or done what you say about 2225-6, since some folks will load any driver into anything at some point, but that doesn't mean its a valid application or supported by JBL. Regards,

    Richard
