    L 200 XO options

    I have 2 questions re L200.
This version of the speaker uses LE 15B s and LE85/H91 s.

I ve heard that the LX 16 (or 16 A) were not great designs and that the L200 would be better served by another 2 way XO.
The LX 10 has been suggested as a better way to go.
Is this really a better option ?

Should one want to convert the L200 into a 3 way by adding say 2405H tweeters, the usual pathway is LX16 + N8000(aka 3106).
If indeed the LX10 serves the LE18B and LE85 'better', would sticking the N8000 to it also be preferable?

    Thank you.

Personally I wouldn’t use any of those vintage JBL network designs. I would use an active crossover between your woofer and your mid range and I would crossover to the 2405 at 10 KHz 18 dB/octave using the top portion of the 4355 crossover.

A few versions of that network, called the 3155 has been posted on this forum in a few places.

    very interesting
would you change anything if the woofers were LE15A (rather than the LE15B) ?

The LE15A is a better woofer, but it requires a 500Hz crossover. Even though JBL used to use a 500 Hz crossover with the LE85, it is not a recommended choice. Also true about your horns. In the 60s they were used down to 500 Hz but by the late 70s they were recommended to be used above 1200 Hz.

If you want to use LE15As, I would suggest using the 375/2440 driver (or any of a number of JBL 4 inch diaphragm models) with an appropriate horn.

Another option would be to change out the woofer for a Jbl 2235H.

This driver was introduced as an iteration of the 2231a/136a woofer in the 1970’s. It takes more power and reproduces lower bass.

I have heard the 4331 Jbl monitors with an electronic crossover and it was excellent.

It actually sounded way better than it had any right to compared to the DD67000.

As l recall the low pass filter was 24 dB at 800 hertz and the high pass filter was 24 dB (acoustic).
That was at Greg Timbers place when we were developing a new analogue electric crossover.

PM me if this interests you and l can follow up on the technical details.

It’s possible to design a 4th order passive network but the active approach allows tweaking the network which users tend to like doing.

The Le15a/2215 had one other crossover available. For the home version it used the LX13 for the S-27 system. In the pro version 4320 it used the 3110. Both were 800Hz it helped a little with the short horn.
