    Convert 2206 into 1200GTI

    Hi,

    I really enjoyed the JBL 1200gti caraudio woofers a decade ago.
    Unfortunatelly, there is no longer a recone-kit available for these. There are plenty 1200gti´s available, but most of them are worn out etc...

    The basket and magnet of the JBL 2206 seems to be identical.
    I´m not shure about the surround and spider?
    The cone is definatelly different.

    Could I aquaplas the cone of a 2206 to achieve similar results as a 1200gti

    Best regards,
    Olaf

    Hello Olaf;

    I built a couple of GTI 1200’s last year. I also had some C8R2206 kits and compared them carefully. As near as I could tell the spiders and surrounds are the same. Like you say the cone is absolutely different and the coil is copper in the GTI

    The 2206 cones are super stiff as well so adding mass will probably get you very close. If I remember the difference in Fs is only 10Hz.

    Hi Barry,

    how did you build your 1200gti`s last year?
    As far as I know there are no recone-kits available since many years...

    Your comparison of the 2206 and 1200gti helps a lot.
    I checked the datasheets of both and the difference in cone-weight (mms) is huge.
    The 2206 has 65gr mms whereas the 1200gti has 140gr (mms).
    I have never worked with aquaplas, but I doubt I can add 75gr to a cone...

    Hello Olaf;

    I had a pair of kits on the shelf for many years.

    I have never worked with Aquaplas either. I can offer no advise there.

    I am interested in how this project goes if you decide to proceed. Like you, I love the old original GTI line.

    Hi Barry,

    I`ll let you know about the project in case I will decide to proceed.
    Do you still have any 1200gti recone kits left you would be willing to sell?

    Regards,
    Olaf

    Well if you look at a 2203 vs 121 you have 35g and the 95g. They also used a stiffer spider in the 121. You could just add a ring over the voice coil on top of the dome/cone. 35 grams only change the FS in of 2234 vs 2235 a couple of hertz so?? Are the coil lengths the same?? x-Max?? Seems the sub would have a longer coil to accommodate a higher X-MAX

    @Barry:
    Thanks a lot mate

    @Rob:
    I I understood barry correct, the surround and spider should be identical. The coils seem to differ in material, but I´m not shure about there size...

    @grumpy:
    Thanks, but I would need 4 kits in total...

    I wonder if Kenny at Upland Loudspeaker could re-create them?

    I was wondering the same thing. I bet if he had a mint finished product and an uninstalled kit he could reverse engineer a new kit.

    Kenny would be my choice as well.

    Comparing the spec-sheets of both woofers, they have different x-max figures.
    2206 = 7,5mm
    1200gti = 5,5mm

    But the voicecoil-size and magnet system is supposed to be identical, that doesn`t make any sense...

    Mechanical or distortion-based Xmax?... They're often not the same.

    I thought x-max is always refeared to a distortion based measurement, whereas x-mech would be dependend on the mechanical capabilities...

    Both spec-sheets mention x-max, so I read these as distortion based.
