    L300A - 136H vs 2235H

I have L300As with the original 136H woofers reconed with C8R2235 / 2235H cones. I also have a pair of 2235H with fresh recones.

There are several threads I've found where people have replaced their original 136 woofers with 2235H and are pleased with the result. I haven't found enough information on whether those replaced were 136A or 136H which could make a difference

Looking at the specs on the two the main difference I see is: 136H rolls off at 25Hz / 2235H rolls off at 20Hz; And 136H max. crossover is 800Hz and 2235H max. crossover is 1000Hz.

When a 136H is reconed with the C8R2235 does it become a 2235H with a 136H sticker or are there differences in the motor/magnet structure remaining?

I'm considering swapping in the 2235Hs to see if I can hear or measure a difference, if they're the same then there is no point to this exercise.

    TIA

A 136H frame and motor is identical to the 2235H frame and motor. If both cones are identical, then you have identical drivers with the only difference being the foilcals.

Thank you Widget, that is what I thought but was not sure. In this case I'll leave the 136H in there and feel that I already have the 2235H "upgrade".

Another question: I'm looking at a spare C8R2235 JBL kit, where should I see the mass ring or should I?

Thanks for the help, long-time lurker here and love the site!

    Current and past JBLs include L100A, L100A (late), L65A, 4312A, 4412A, 4410A, L15, L20T, 1.8Ti, 240Ti, LSR6312P, LSR6328P, L300A and probably some I've forgotten.

The mass ring is shipped with the kit and is unattached like the dome. Both the dome and the mass ring are glued in place during the reconing process.

    Not an "upgrade"

    Sorry.

I’ve read posts from a couple of guys calling it an upgrade, feel that it tightens up the bass, but I have no idea what they’re starting with.

    Do you see a downside to reconing a 136H as a 2235H?

    Thanks.

Not original and the 136 actually goes a bit lower, but falls off a bit sooner.

But, there really are no 136 cones left so, there is what there is.

If you put a 136 and 2235 on the bay, both in identical condition, the 136 would get more $$$.

I wouldn't use that metric as a proof of quality, but yes, I would prefer a NOS pair of 136As over a NOS pair of 2235Hs.

That said, the 2235H has measurably lower distortion and because of its ferrite magnet is free from the demagnetization problems associated with the 136A's alnico magnets.

Now comparing the 136H and the 2235H, in that case I would prefer the 2235H.

Lastly in this case, this is all academic. The 2235H is what is on hand and is a fine driver.

Being that these are the 300A they started life with 136H ferrite woofers, so from what I'm reading it isn't as significant as the change from a 136A to the 2235H. At any rate, thank you for your comments, I appreciate the knowledge that is shared.
