Two different woofers in the same enclosure?

    Hi,

does it make any sense to combine two different, electrically paralleled woofers, say a 2234H and a 2235H, in the same vented enclosure of appropriate size? Would there be any way to calculate box size, vent dimensions etc? Were the outcome predictable at all?

    Best regards!

Mile Nestorovic? The man who created the famous McIntosh MC-3500 and MI-350 tube amplifiers and passed away on 05-01-2009 due to a stroke? Never thought that he also was busy in terms of loudspeaker designing.

    Best regards!

The last Nestorovic loudspeakers, the Model 5AS-MK5 are still some of the best speakers I've heard. I managed to find a minty pair of MK4s a couple years back, but alas, they were not as good as the MK5 a friend has. The MK5 have exceptional performance.

You can read his patent about the 2 woofers electrically connected in a sealed box online, not that it will explain exactly what he did. I believe he implemented a variation of the technique on some Speakerlab models where he designed for a while before going out on his own and starting Nestorovic Labs. I think there's a link to the patent in this thread.

Here's the Nestorovic patent. I think the ones in that thread are updates to the original by his business partner.

You have to choose one woofer for optimizing the enclosure size and tuning.

So, you get one woofer operating in an optimized environment that may not work well for the other woofer.

You will have different system fs points that can cause unwanted interference in the vent-loading region of the response. Since you would have to consider a large enclosure volume (285L??) it may make sense to use two sub enclosures, each optimized for a woofer.

A plus is that for an enclosure that size the needed partition will allow some amount in interior bracing.
