JBL 2122h Midrange Woofer Seems extremely stiff

    Hello,

Hope everyone is fairing well during these times.

I recently got a pair of 4345's stock in my possession. The 2122h midranges are very stiff. The surrounds are fine and spider fine. Sound is OK, not more impressive than my 2121's which worries me.

Do they come from the factory this stiff? Should I run a low hz tone and try to loosen them up?

    Any suggestions are much appreciated.

    Thank you

How are you judging how stiff they are?? If it's mounted in the speaker it should be because it is installed in a sealed sub enclosure that both stiffens things up raises the Fs of the speaker. They are clearly not woofers so don't expect them to behave that way. Post a picture of them if you can.

Rob is right. Also those drivers have the underhung voice coil and the ± Xmax is very small.

A couple of things come to mind from the pics.

These have been refoamed. I wonder if the foam dust screen over the motor vent on the top plate has rotted and migrated into the gap. The rotted foam turns to goo and will prevent free movement of the voice coil.

The spider also looks like its too heavy.
