    Crossover recommendations

I'm needing assistance with crossover choices. Currently I have an A7 configuration in 825/828 cabinets with GPA 416c, Altec 802-8g, and 511 horns. Current crossovers are N501-8A. Ive sourced some 1505 horns, and am shopping for 288 drivers at the moment. Im curious which crossover to use. I can either have mine updated/rebuilt, or choose another VOTT crossover. I read that the ones I have may be better suited to the small format horns and drivers. Will they still be appropriate for the 288/1505 setup ? This is for my living room system primarily for vinyl, dedicated 2 channel, SS amps. I'm not interested in Bi-amping or active crossovers at this point. Any pointers would be appreciated because I don't want to make any purchases that don't make sense. Also, while shopping for 288s, I'm assuming it doesn't matter which I choose because I plan to send them to GPA for refurbishing and diaphragms. Is this correct ? Thank you all for any and all help. Adrian

I haven't used this crossover, but it does have a following. I am not sure it can be considered a finished product, and perhaps should be seen as an experimental beginning point.

The later 288's, G and following have heavier magnets, command higher prices. I would expect them to be different, but cannot say I've compared them to the earlier ones.

Another place to ask your questions involving Altec wisdom may be the high efficiency speaker forum at Audio Asylum.

There's also the Altec user board, but it's a bit sleepy over there these days. Searches may turn stuff up.

I can only say what I've done to my Altec project (416/511/802D). The results have been spectacular.

I built a textbook second order (12dB/octave) crossover at 800Hz, then added the Altec 30923 "Attenuator Circuit" to it. This circuit is essentially a compression driver compensation network that attenuates the overbearing, nasally "honk" that becomes a problem in home stereo use. It also naturally "boosts" the high frequency content.

It's a very easy build, even for amateurs like me, but the outcome will blow your mind. No more honking!!!!!

By the way, that's my Altec project in my avatar.

When I was experimenting with the 811 and 511 horns and 1" Altec drivers, I found the 811 sounded best above 1200Hz and the 511 sounded best above 800Hz like you are doing it. I bet with that compensation circuit you have a pretty darned good system.
