    Help

Came to this Forum with a lot of expectations.
As an Old, retired, Electronic tech, New to JBL's
I came here for help and knowledge.
Hundreds of "views", Really very little technical help.
Other than the DUH responses. Either anyone knowing about
the tech side of speakers(Xovers, Cabinet acoustics, Etc),
is keeping it to themselves, Or I asked the wrong questions,
In the wrong Forum. So I'll move on.
I Don't want to upset, or trigger,
But I have. And I have Apologized

Any feedback or thoughts on subject will be received
and viewed as positive flow of information.

    Gee.
71 posts in about a year and you haven't found Nirvana yet?

Are you an impatient youngster . . . or an impatient old fart?

I've benefitted from significant technical assistance here over many years. I'm sure I'll need more in the near future, and I'll patiently await the expert contributions. Sure, a few have departed, and some don't drop by all that frequently these days, but that's normal. Sometimes Life gets in the way.

Hang out. Even if you don't get the help and knowledge you want, you might be able to impart some. And that should be fulfilling, if you're human!

". . . as you have no doubt noticed, no one told the 4345 that it can't work correctly so it does anyway."—Greg Timbers

    What’d I miss?

I have seen a bunch of chatter about what you did back in the day, which I find very interesting by the way, but I didn’t notice what you didn’t get answered.

I am no expert here but will paw through your posts over the next day or so and see if I can help.

This is a small forum. Some of the other audio forums have more members on line at anytime that we have members in total so take that into account.

I personally hope you stick around a while.

    Barry.
If we knew what the hell we were doing, we wouldn't call it research would we.

    L36/L15/4406/4311's

    Barry
    Thanks

    This was from L36,
1 Notice glue was around pots only on xovers just, pry around that area to release?
    2 changing out with 035ti's?
    3 changes to damping?
    4 F ing with port?
5 xover? Rebuilding? Removing pots from system? Active?
    6 connectors?

This JBL L15 Refurbish Hi Happy 4th Came across this thread
    Any thoughts ?

    Help with L15 Refurbish
    1) Cabinets, dampening, leave it, add to it, remove/replace it ????

    2) 034 Tweeter has lost it's silver paint/aluminum? covering, works, replace, repaint ??

    3) Crossover, Cap replacement suggestions
    Change inductors to air ?
    Change resistors ?
    Build external "charged xover" ?
Change xover frequency to 3K(read somewhere?)
    4) Change connectors
And anything that will help with project.
    Not worried about keeping original.
    Just having FUN.
    Pair of 4406's after these.

Was looking for basically the same thoughts, more or lees,
    on L36,L15, 4406 and 4311.

    CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP
Knowing it was possible for new guy to wander in the wrong forum Thread,
I figured I would get guidance.

    Most disappointing,"among others", was feedback,
or lack of,on Xovers. Sound I Know, but it seems Nobody is into
Xovers except sending them out to get upgraded. Or these Models
are not the pick of the litter(Con)?

Maybe just to tech for folks here.(Now that's Condescending)
Being I'm an impatient old Fart, looking for knowledge,
that you would think would be readily found here. But I should have been patient.

"Whirly Bird"(even spelled wrong ) is what you missed. It was found to be "condescending"
The "Chatter" which I was enjoying, was for those who haven't been around like Wolf and I.
But in such a politically correct world, words are misconstrued, and have way to many
meanings, to different people. To say inter service hazing is condescending, was my trigger,
as I didn't see it coming. I offended, and apologized. I was offended by "condescending".
So end of Bantering. And this is what we see happening in this country.
Whirly Bird is Condescending. LMFAO A Grown,(probably War Hero) man calling,
Whirly Bird, Condescending. As a Submariner, I heard a lot of words for Subs,
Semen Tank, YMCA, Dildo Etc.(And worse)and laughed everyone of them off, actually felt proud.
    WORDS, WORDS, WORDS, He/She/Them/Us/Man/Girl/Boy/Women/White/Black.
Getting wound up, so will stop. But you get the jest.

Maybe things have changed. I came here over ten-years ago back when I was just 53. I guess I had enough patience to eventually get to the point of receiving more advice and help (and critiques) than I even asked for! All good though. Now I'm 66 and, when I get some time, will need some help in refurbishing the 4345s I picked up over ten-years ago. I'm sure I'll get good help here.

I think most of us here are old-farts!

Hope you live another ten years, being patient, to get feedback on your garage 4345's
If they freely give up info like you, it could be another 10 years.

Mine aren't garage speakers, they've been in my living room since I got them almost 11-years ago. And I did get plenty of help with some custom crossovers that were diagnosed from pictures as having some wires in the wrong places. And the schematic followed for the crossover build came from this site.

    I have three daughters. And I thought I was a combative curmudgeon, until . . .

    Fine. Leave. Goodbye!

    Hello Pigboat,

I am no expert, especially with things like cabinet construction/refurbishing and passive crossovers, and I don't own any of these speakers.
I also have no daughter, so take my opinions with a grain of salt, but here is what I would gather from what I read around here among the years.

1: leave it alone unless you hear or see problems
2: no need unless a problem occurs, and probably not beneficial without a crossover modification (measurement, simulation, etc.). If the 035 was cited as a replacement part by JBL that probably just indicates that the original driver was NLA at the time and the 035 was a sub optimal solution (NLA as well these days)
    3: No
    4: No
5: rebuilding is probably overkill but you could replace the caps and pots. Zilch posts come to mind for more info
6: you can clean them if they are oxidised, and replace them if you need to install bigger wires and/or different types of connectors

    Pair of 4406's after these.
    1: leave it alone
2: any covering would probably alter the weight and overall behavior more than the original one, or its absence
    3:
caps: any good cap that fits and is in your budget. Parts express has all the majors brands, along with opinions
inductors: no reason to change (does not wear), and changing them would alter resistance and change xover behavior
resistors: no reason to change (does not wear)
charge coupled: probably overkill, but member 4313B did it (and posted a dedicated thread about it) with similar sized speakers, apparently with great success.
    change xover fc: why?
    4: parts express

Any of the speakers in your list would probably call for the same answers.
All the info you seem to look for is already on these forums, you just need to search for it (possibly using google with a site:audioheritage.org query), and discover new things along the way

    hope this helps

    Colleagues,

Sorry about the derailment, Mia Culpa. This will be my last addition to that: The motors were 10 cylinders opposed. On 22 Feb 1967, instead of breathing the fresh air of freedom I spent the the next 10 years trying to ruin my health, mentally and physically. It took a good woman and the threat of going to jail to wake me up. Because of this poor behavior, my memories of the 60's and 70's are at best misfiled. Not exactly proud of this but there it is.

I got lost on a carrier once at Hunters Point.

Now back to JBL/ Altec stuff.
    KEEP ON LISTENING!

I only spent 6 years trying (68-75).... have had a wonderful woman change my life since 1972.

My last duty station was aboard a carrier (CVA-64) . Even after 18 months on "Connie", I would still get lost, daily.

I'd get a call "accident on deck 7-frame 12 (or some such) , grab a camera" ..go do to deck 7 .. well you can't get to frame 12 from where you are, go up to deck 4, cross to frame 19, then all they way down to deck 8, then up to 7, back to 32, take a port turn and follow up to 12, good luck retracing to get back". so many voids & dead ends

(but I cheated when going back to my rack, took the pilots escalator up to the second and then down to the third where I lived)

-deck numbers changed to protect the innocent-

oh wait, there were no innocents...
Some kind of happiness is measured out in miles

I hope you stick around, and don't have a thin skin.
there is a lot of help around here, and a lot of opinions. I have found that there are 3 things you do not do say to another man. 1. your dog is stupid, 2 your wife is ugly, and 3 your speakers suck.
If you want to start a kerfuffle, just say to an audiophoole, after he has spent an obscene amount of money on his fearless fosdick speaker cables with polarized hammered unobtainium inserts, (btw never call them wires) were a waste of money.

Speaker systems seem to be 1 part science, 1 part opinion, and 1 part alchemy. So just relax and have fun. BTW I was an ET striker on the Pomodon before I was sh*tcanned in 1967 on a medical. Now there was a REAL pigboat.

Peace, (Shalom) Tranquility and Outrageous Sex. Which at my age is any.

    Keep on listening
