    A JBL L300 DIY Project

    Hello friends,

I am currently working on building an L300 speaker using Nelson Pass xo. I have already ordered the cross-over parts from the Madisound online. I am want to make a cabinet like this:

    https://www.yoycart.com/Product/534163460324/

And install the tweeter on top of it. I am going the make an 5 cubic feet volume for the 2235H's and tune it to 30Hz (by two 4" x 11" ports).

The only problemI have is the horn. I have the short 2307 horn (which works for the 4-way version). Is there any other horn (like the one in the picture above) that works fine with the xo using the 2420 driver. I cannot find the 2312 anyway... Is there any solution for this?

Any help is greatly appreciated, as I am kinda excited and want to build this speaker as soon as possible.
I will post photos as I start building the speaker cabinets.

    thanks

    Thanks for sharing.

I have been looking for "Front Type" loudspeakers. They have been very difficult to find.

Well Thomee, the good news that passive components are flexible ( from the perspective that one can alter their values by adding additional parts to them ).

So ( no matter what ) you really won't be out of pocket if it takes forever to locate a pair of 2312 horns.

As you likely guessed, the Nelson Pass network is unique and only usable on a real L300 ( as is any custom network ).

My recommendation would be to buy a pair of Altec 811 or 511 horns ( on the used market ).

The 2420/le85 plays nicely on those horns ( according to Zilch ).

At least the Altec are deep horns ( compared to all the latest crop of wave-guides that are at the very most, half the depth ).

A similar depth horn means the values of the passive components have a better chance of being useful in a working crossover for those radials/sectoral.

Also, I'm also pretty bullish on this ZXPC BiRadial sold here ( click the pic ).
    - though it requires some modelling-clay work to fix it's flare-rate problems.

They need about a 1/2 lb of plumbers putty smoothed into the throat section to be usable > but once that's done a person can get a solid 750hz out of this horn when driven by a JBL 2425/6/7 driver.

Your 2420 would need an adapter to make it into screw-on to mate to the ZXPC ( which wouldn't be the end of the world sonically ).

Getting an Altec Radial ( or the ZXPC mentioned above ) would put you a step closer to the setup seen in your pic ( which was meant to be a TAD 4001 on a TH4001 > or should be ).

    My 50c worth.

You propose to use 2235 h woofer for your project. JBL did in fact spec the 2235h as a suitable drop in replacement for the original driver (2231 from fading memory ) .
Please be aware that the 2235 is pretty much a sub woofer with a good response down to 20 Hz. This is achieved with the addition of a mass ring of 30 gms installed under the dust cap internal to the voice coil former.
While this achieves it's aims as always it comes at a price, a drop in efficiency and a loss of useable response at the top end.
The sonic signature in the 400 to 800 Hz octave becomes somewhat dark / muddy / thick. etc. It is of course unreasonable to expect 30g of dead weight on the speaker cone to be as clear and agile as a hf diaphragm weighing considerably less.
From personal experience a X/O in the 600 Hz region yields much greater clarity and solid imaging.
This of course can not be done with 2420 etc
on the conical horn . 800 is pretty much as low as you can go.
The solution is to aim for 500hz if you can find a horn +driver combo that will play well in that region. To that end you will need a large format driver and a suitable horn.
In my homebrew I opted for a B&C 2inch exit driver on a JBL 2380 horn
Using an active network it quickly becomes apparent that the 2235 just will not play well at 800

Best of luck with your project

Sorry ,this product is not sell anymore.
(It is out of date or link error. Most likely, the seller no longer sells this product .)

when I looked at the page yesterday, the price was approx $4,500US EACH . for the price of a single, you could have bought a pair of real JBL L-300's

    Bond,LOL!you are kidding
They said they developed woofer by themselves directly from JBL 2235H and ATC SB100-375,the tweeter is SELENIUM 408Ti,cab is TAD 2402,brand is NBM(nothing but music)
Not bad,but i think the price is too expensive
