Possible to fix D2 driver?

So, this is a little confusing for me. Are we saying that if a studio using M2s damaged a diaphragm (not uncommon), they would install a new driver they have at the ready (instead of a spare diaphragm), and then just throw away the original driver? Is there not a core return process for reworking?
