LE 25-2 damper ring

Hi,
4311 studio monitors and other vintage JBL models have LE25-2 tweeters with damper rings.
By now they're worn out like that you see in the pic.
Now, I've a question:
Does it have any effect on the tweeter? How much?

The foam is necessary to control and mitigate diffraction effects ( so yes, one should use it since it's such a friggin cheap fix).

OTOH, that line of speakers is so compromised I truly wonder about the wisdom in employing something that ultimately helps imaging and flatten response ( which those speakers are not known for ).
