Listening distance

I would like to hear about your experience about the required listening-distance when using big monitors.

Being more precise, what would be the minimum listening-distance for a speaker like the westlake audio HR-1 ?

The HR-1 has the drivers rather far apart on the baffle.
Their probably is more than 8" between the midcone and midhorn in the sensitive midrange.
I guess it takes a serious listening-distance before the individual drivers join to homogeneous soundstage...

And, so much depends on the quality / characteristics of any given environment. Yeow. One walk around a room with a pink-noise / RTA mic is a real eye opener. Help! Not sure installing these big systems in other than optimum (professionally designed) rooms makes a lot of sense. And, not a lot can be done in many of today's condos, etc., when rooms, hallways, stairs intersect. Soft walls, weak floors, wild and crazy standing waves, wall hot spots. How much of this can digital systems help? Any data?

Most of the problems you describe affect bass response and there is little that a DSP can do to correct these problems. That said, in problematic rooms we try to use speakers that are less affected by the room than more traditional systems. Multiple small subs located on opposing walls to help with the bass and line array speakers go a long way towards minimizing the ill affects of problematic rooms.

To the original poster’s question, I think most systems sound best when you are 9-10 feet away ~3m.

Then scroll down to recommended listening distances section. Did not see the specific monitor listed there, but gives you a good idea. I am sure you can send them an email and get a good answer. Some of the studios I worded in had Westlakes - nice monitors!

I use JBL 4722 cinema speaker in a home environment. The speakers are set up in a 10' equilateral triangle. It is an all active system using digital XO and the drivers are time aligned and integrate (i.e. image) very well, even at a short distance for cinema speakers: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/113-s...l#post57390652

I have looked at the westlake article too in the past, but as you mentioned the big monitor HR-1 isn´t mentioned. I will email them, but I´m not shure if they´re interested that much as I´m not a customer.

I guess the HR-1 needs more listening-distance than the 4350, as the individual drivers are vertically further apart.
