Altec Santiago re-build

Going to rebuild cabinets for some Altec Santiago's I have. Any suggestions for modifications that would be an improvement over the existing original cabinets?

Greetings from the peaceful peoples republic of Washington,
My only suggestion would be too make the box slightly larger, just shy of 6ft3. Instead of 281/2 inches tall, make it say 36 inches. Oh and make certain the horn is adequetly damped, and the box air tight. Damned good speaker the Santiago.

Okay, that was one of the aspects I was wondering about. A little more area to help that big woofer find it's voice.

I have two sets. First I restored entirely back to original and they really sound great. I like them better than some Valencias I had. The 2nd set cabinets are banged up a bit too much so I might as well build new cabinets and I can make changes if appropriate.

The difference will be subtle, depending on the music you listen to. Very low bass will have more authority like pipe organ pedals. In thier previous life my 411's were in a 6ft3 box and were good down to about 25 Hz

in my present room, unequalized. As you know, much depends on the room.

Thanks Ed. thinking about going higher slightly with them. Should help to raise the horn up just a few inches.

Well I do have the 4 414A's, but those are planned for a Malibu build.

Hi Drugolf,

Here is what I did and I wish that I had a picture. I built a box that was tall and narrow like the Stonehenge III, and incorporated the stepped baffle like the Santiago. So in essence it was a tall slender Santiago about 48 inches tall.

The internal volume was about 7ft3 before the horn, drivers, and stiffening. This put the center of the horn about 40 inches or so above the floor. I could not have dreamed of better results. Left-Rignt panorama and depth of field

were superb. As stated by me earlier, they were good to about 25 hertz in my room.

PS If you build the malibu, consider using the eq pad used the the santiago

Well I do have the 4 414A's, but those are planned for a Malibu build.

Use the two 411 for a "push pull slot loaded" subwoofer to be used with the Malibus. Since you already have a pair of Santiagos.
