    JBL 2-way build: 2380+2445 and 4507+2226

JBL 2380+2445 and JBL 4507+2226 Plan

I am looking to build a two-way system using JBL horns and woofers for home use.

For the high frequency, I am looking to use JBL 2380 horns with JBL 2445 drivers. 2445 could be replaced by 2446.

For the low frequency, I am looking to use JBL 4507 boxes (built by third party) with 2226 woofers.

At the beginning, I am going to use an active crossover and two power amplifiers (for horns and woofers). Eventually, maybe I can build or buy a passive crossover. Shall I 16ohm versions or 8ohm version? Or 8ohm for woofers and 16ohm for horns? or the other way around?

I could upgrade step by step for horns if I am happy with it. Maybe I can upgrade to TAD 4001 wooden horns and TAD drivers.

I definitely don't want a three-way system with a pair of super tweeters.

    Here are a few concerns:
    1. Crossover frequency at 550hz possible? Will the 15-inch 2226 woofer match well with this horn/driver combination or any resaonably sized horn/driver combination?
    2. Do I lose a lot of sound above 10K hz?
    3. How difficult will any passive crossover be? Is there any ready-made ones?
    5. Lastly, will the system JBL 2380+2445 and JBL 4507+2226 sound good or reasonably audiophile?

You may suggest changing parts, say 2385 for 2380, or 2441 for 2446.

The JBL 4673 system is essentially what you are describing (depending on vintage, it is an exact description, same drivers, same horn). The 3115 crossover is a 500Hz crossover. The horn will load the driver down to 500Hz, sort of.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not a fan of the 2380 horn. Look at its frequency response and polar plots. It has just about no pattern control below 1KHz and it drops like a rock below 700Hz. Furthermore, I just don't like the sound of it. If you are set on using it, I'd stick to a higher crossover (particularly if passive because you'll never have a flat response down to 500Hz due to the response of the horn itself). Due to my involvement in the cinema industry (going on 39 years now), I've had a lot of interaction with the 2380 (used on the 4673 and 4670) and it has never been good sounding to me. If you don't mind mixing and matching, give the Altec MRII594 horn with a 288 or 299 a try. It sounds significantly better than the 2380 with anything behind it. From JBL, something from the 2350 line (2352) of horns and 1.5" drivers (e.g. 2447) would sound better.

    Hi ggould,

I would suggest You to look at the JBL STX825 solution, where 2226 have been used up to 1.3kHz. With the mentioned 2380 horn I think it can be used from about 1.1kHz, so better loading for VHF driver can be get, and less nasty sounding.

I think if you want a nice two way design like this it is doable. I like the 2226 in 4507 with 2343/2440, I also have the 2385A and although it is nice as it loses a lot of the horn sound it does have a problem with lower frequencies, I use all my setups as 3 way designs but I did recently buy a peerless tweeter that is good down to 1200hz about.. I think my 2440 with Radian aluminum sounds better than my 2441 with the titanium.. cheers. A well built 4507 is a good cab to have, with 2226 = 4647A

I think the cheapest and easiest way to achieve hifi-quality with these drivers would be by using a A290 Yuichi-Horn and 2450sl diaphragm in your 2445 drivers.

You have allready mentioned the TAD TH4001 horn, I believe the yuichi is very close to that. Using the aquaplased 2450sl diaphragms will give you reasonable hf extension without a tweeter. The 2450sl dia´s go for 100$, so very cheap.

But I have no idea about the crossovers, some experts may help out.
Probably the yuichi a290 loads the driver much better below 1khz than the 2380, so a lower crossover is possible??

For a passive crossover look at the 3110A a 800hz with Equalization for your horns. 8 ohm low freq and 16 ohm high freq.
