    jbl 2384 with 18" midwoofer?

    Hello,
I've got a JBL 2384 horn with jbl 2451 driver. This is just a thought: has anyone tried pairing these with an 18" woofer? Say 700hz crossover?

Here's my idea: mobile 3 way system with compact boxes of 3 cu. ft. or less for easy handling.
18" midbass woofer to cover 80-700hz (Faital 18FH500) sealed box - 2.5 cu ft.
    JBL 2384 + jbl 2451, 700hz and up
Subwoofer 18" sub woofer -- ported 3 cu ft.

I think that a "fast" 18 inch midrange/midbass is not a common woofer but I saw a few that may work:
    Faital 18FH500
    Peavey 1808-8 HE BWX

It seems like a light cone, low Le, 18" woofer in a sealed box should do well covering 80-700hz. Will at match the JBL 2384 horn?

    thanks,
    Herman

". . . as you have no doubt noticed, no one told the 4345 that it can't work correctly so it does anyway."—Greg Timbers

That's one option. Generally, is there a rule of thumb when selecting an 18" that is optimized for upper freq range, like low Le or low moving mass? What should I look for?

    x-over freq

What's the optimal crossover frequency for the 2384 horn mated to JBL 2451be or TAD 4002? Maybe that will help to narrow down the choice between a 15" or 18" midbass woofer? I plan to use that woofer down to about 80hz. Sub takes over below that.

The JBL 2245 woofer is a great device. And it is limited to 300Hz on top. Therefore, the midrange driver will need to pick-up from there and reach your high frequency driver. Most likely, it will need to be a midrange driver with a cone to go that low as very few horns reach down to 300Hz.

Another great 18" woofer that is often overlooked, is the JBL 2240 with an Fs of 30Hz. It requires less volume than a 2245 and goes up higher. Easier to integrate with a midrange horn.

    Just sayin' ;-)

BTW Forget about an 18" woofer in a 3cft cabinet. You need 8cft at a minimum for great low end bass.

I use a 2453h-SL on the 2384 waveguide in a JBL 4722 cinema speaker with dual subs. JBL recommends a 630 Hz XO point in an active configuration and 800 Hz passive. I use digital XO at 630 Hz and sounds really good. The 4722 bass cabs with the double 15" go down to 40 Hz and I digital XO to the subs. Mostly listen to music, I like the "big" sound from this combo. But it is just one approach...
