    Any big difference between D130 and D130A

    I just bought a C40 with D130A from a local guy, but when I examined it, however, it had an aluminum dome.
    Googling on it, I see D130 had an aluminum dome while D130A had a black paper dome.
    Looks like later C40 had D130. I hear the sound is great. Just curious about any difference between them in terms of sound reproduction. Any feedback or comment? Thanks.

    Just to clarify, the D130 had the aluminum voice-coil and aluminum dust-dome. There has always been some confusion between the 130A (no "D") which had the copper voice-coil and paper dust-dome. I'm assuming you know what you have! If you have the D130A as noted on the frame or magnet structure, that's likely a very old unit. Got any photos?

    Long ago there was also the D130A, sometimes written as D-130-A which also had the 4-inch copper coil but, at least in photos, the paper dust-dome. It would appear from the catalogs that sometime around 1952 the D-130-A became the 130A. As to the dust-dome, there is even some earlier evidence in the catalog photos of the D130 without the aluminum dome, but I've not seen live or in photos a D130A with an aluminum dome.

    You're right. D130A with black paper dome, while D130 with aluminum dome.
    I hear D130A has deeper bass than D130.
    Re photos of this, I would love to show, but it's very hard to take off the grill of C40.

    Even if the 130A had an aluminum dome, or the D130 had a paper dome, they are still two different animals. The only commonality between the two is the cone itself.

    If you review the JBL Thiele-Small parameters for those two drivers you will note that they do not match. The only speaker JBL manufactured that was a spot on match to the 130A was the 2220A / 2220B, and subsequent models.

    As for removing the grille on the C40, like the C34 and C55, there are only three screws. Very simple to 'pull out of the way', not remove.

    Typically, the C40 & C34 had two component options. One being the 130A / 175-DLH / N1200, or the D130 / 075 / N2500.

    BTW - The grille fabric on your C40 has horse hair woven into it. Very unlikely it would ever be manufactured again.

    Yes, the D130 and the 130A are different.

    The D with the aluminum voice coil will go higher and was marketed as "full-range" while the A goes deeper and, I think, can handle more power. There is, however, something sublime about the way the D130 handles some instruments, especially strings, that made it not only a revered high-fidelity speaker but it also helped it achieved fame as a guitar-amp speaker. Listen to one playing cello music and you may hear what I love about them.

    It's great to know the difference between the two.
    Very likely the original owner replaced 130A with 130 at some point. Now, the current network on my C40 is N1200 that requires 130A per spec. Fitted with 130, though, it still sounds very good. I want to find an original 130A to put it back, though.

    Re removal of the grille, you said it's very simple.
    The three screws you mentioned are inside the cabinet on the right.
    How do I reach there without removing the grille? Grille s tightly stuck there. Opening the back cabinet?
    Can you explain how?

    Maybe that's why JBL engineers replaced 130A with 130 for later C40 models, though with different network?

    The C40 is just the model of an enclosure. You could buy it empty and put anything you wanted in it, or order it with usually two or three loads depending on year. The last catalog in the library that lists it shows it only with the 001 load which is 130A and LE175DLH, FWIW.

    Yes, 001 with D130A. How come mine got 130, not 130A is a mystery to me. The seller said he never modified it after he got it from the original owner...

    You keep mixing the models, dropping the "D" from the 130 or adding both letters in other statements. Makes it very hard to determine what you have or to answer any questions. What do the speakers say on their backsides?

    Again, you could buy any speaker from JBL and put it in any cabinet from JBL. You have no way of knowing what was "original".

    Yea, you're right. What I mean is 001 system like this:
    001 130A 175DLH N1200
    Now, my C40 has D130 (aluminum dome) instead of 130A.
    I think the original owner chose D130 for its system instead of 130A when he bought it as a monaural speaker in 1957.
