    L40 or L40A or what ?

    Hi !
This is my first post in this forum so CIAO to all from ITALY !

I am old owner from 1988 of TLX8 (i bought at 22 years old with after lotttt of testing so i LOVED them also if they say is no more "real" JBL ) and now of a great L50 (almos perfect in all) and also a L40 (found at good money, some minor defeact on wood but just refoamed)
My question is how to indentify the "correct" version L40 : it has inside a couple of 127H1 (if i dont read bad the writing), black plastic back woofer. The L50 has differente woofer for example, metal on back.
Also from outside the woofer is different, has a smaller central dust cup.
Is it correct ? The connections for wiring on the back of case are golded and to screew, but in old brochure of L40 i see the "turning plastic connector" like the L50.
So i'm not sure wich kind of L40 (?) i have bought.
    They are L40, L40A or what ?

Thanks to all and sorry for silly question maybe !

Here's the link to the L40 consumer tech sheet:

Here's the link to the L40A consumer tech sheet:

The only difference between the two is the 127A (Alnico magnet structure) woofer is in the L40 and the 127H (ferrite magnet structure) woofer is in the L40A, which is the later version.

Here's a link to Theile Small low frequency driver parameters and definitions:

    http://www.jblproservice.com/pdf/Thi...Parameters.pdf

127H is listed but no 127H-1. They may be one in the same. I'll do some further research for additional info.

    Thanks !
I had found yesterday the same pdf.
So i SUPPOSE that the 127H1 are simply the 127H ....the cannot have leaved a "gap" in technical paper.

Maybe i'm wrong but is the easy solution to my quiz...

The correct woofer for your L40 is the 127A (Same woofer as in your L50). The 127A is the exact same woofer as the 125A found in the L36, except the dust cap is reversed. The 127H should be compatible as it uses the same frame as the 127A and 125A, just a different magnet.

The 127H-1 is the woofer that comes with newer speakers such as the L80T, L80t3, 4410, 4410A, XPL160, etc. Despite the similar name, it really has very little in common with the 127H or 127A.

Keep an eye out for a pair of 127A, or even a pair of 125A or 127H. Any of those three will be a much better fit for those speakers than the 127H-1.

I discovered that the 127H-1 was used in studio monitors 4410L/R & 4410AL/R, had aquaplas applied to the cone. The the 127H-1 had a black frame and the 127H apparently had an unpainted aluminum frame like the 125A. I could not find much on the parameters of the 127H-1, except these: Magnetic Structure weight was 6 lbs, the Flux Density was 1.08 Tesla and the SPL was 90 db.

So they changed both the woofers ?
Really strange, usually in Italy if woofers are broken they change with other brands, less expensive and easy to find here....

Cannot be a "later" L40 ? Or for european market ? As wrote up is also different in the connectors on back, they are golden and to screew, not the "turning" version as in L50.
In the official brochure of L40 i see the "turning" version, maybe they changed later ?
Or the old owner changed lot of components....

Anyway they sound GREAT, also compared to L50 are...i dont's say better but....
I have to check wich woofers are inside the L50, just courius

    Wiring og back.
    Maybe was changed ?
So a lot of mods in these speakers...
Well, i spent 100 euro (about 110$) and they are playing very well. Woofer just refoamed, wood in good shape, only minor scratches.
Grilles quite good also (only a pin is broken on one speaker, i need to understand if is possibile to replace)
I cannot complain, selling pieces i can get more than double of money in Italy.
JBL in Italy are quite expensive, i tried to find L100 or more but impossible to find at least than 800-1000 euro. So i took L50 and soon after these L40 (was really good price)
Waiting maybe in future for others...
