Cool! They are Wharfedale Airedale speakers. Yours look intact and original. If you remove the crossover, you will find a mid and tweet facing upwards out of the top. The inside holds a 15 and some clay tiles. Should have recessed casters in the base. They are early 60's vintage.

    Are these yours?

when you got your cabinets, were they in 'project' form -- or did you get a chance to listen to them in original configuration? how are the drivers? I hear they should have a big red magnets.....

When I picked mine up they had already been gutted and the drivers shipped to Korea. The guy left the cabinets behind his garage, so they were in pretty sad shape when I got them. I liked the overall shape and saw their potential. So, a year and $1000 later they are in my living room.

I would say good bass when placed in the corner and a very open airy sound, ala Bose reflecting. The mids and highs fire at the ceiling while the back of the drivers are open to the air and radiates out 360 degrees.

    Wharfedale tweeters

The airdales are not bad sounding but the foam surrounds on the tweeters do rot. They do have big alnico magnets though.

where do you get replacement surrounds from, or is a recone the best bet due to the driver,s age?

No cones or surrounds are available. The surrounds will have to be home made. The foam is very basic, just a thin piece of fairly open weave stuff should do.
You may be lucky and find yours are OK.
Fortunately the bass drivers don't suffer this problem.
