D140R's keep and recone or replace

    Hi,
I have a couple of D140R that although working seem old and fragile to the point that I am afraid that I'll damage them if I crank them up.

Should I recone them or replace them with something like the 2226?
I play varied music in a 20 by 30 room and have about 150WPC on tap for HT duties and 40 W SET for music.

Currently I am experimenting with a 2225H in 4 ft tuned to 40 hz and it is OK but not what I had hoped for. (30 to 500 hz bandpass).

    Thanks.

    Glen

Can you post some pictures of the D140R

The D140R is variation of the D140F and was made for the Rogers Organ company.
The difference is the paper dust cap in place of the aluminum one.
I have 42 year old D140F that work fine and don't look fragile.

One of the woofers has a bit of surround missing.
What can I use to repair this?

I have seen silicone adhesive used.

It will seal the hole and stay flexible, maybe one of our recone members can you other ideas.

....check the spider to see if it is old & brittle. I have a pair of +40 year old original ALTEC woofers that are in great shape, so age is not necessarily an indicator of condition.

I have a few 2226s/2225s and they are very good drivers - lots of punch but they really need some big power to perform their best.

One spider is kinda puffy. The ridges are flattened out on one hemisphere from the effects of gravity I guess. when I push it back to the normal position it causes the
VC to rub for a few cycles until it puffs back out of shape and things seem OK.
It had been pulled and replaced with a 2225 so I think it must have been giving the previous owner a bit of trouble.

I think a recone may be in my future if I keep these woofers.

What shop would you guys recommend for the work? I would like genuine JBL parts if possible.

Our own forum member Edgewound, in Upland CA, is the guy to go to for recones.

(And, it's a pretty drive on 101, or you could go the boring, but faster, route down 5.)

Bridge the tiny gap missing in the surround with ordnary rubber cement. After it sets, paint it black with a "Sharpie" permanent marker.
