    2235H recone

    Surround disintegrated and apparently the VC bottomed in the slot. Could not move cone up/down by hand. Finally wiggled it out and some of the coil on the bottom was bent at right angles.

    1. Suggestions on what fluid will make getting the glue holding the spider to the frame and what held the surround to the frame easier to remove?

    2. Suggestions for a good cone kit? Even if I could find an OEM it would be expen$ive.

    Hi Donald;

    MEK will break down the surround adhesive and possibly the spider adhesive if it is not an “instant” adhesive. If MEK is unavaiable to you, fingernail polish remover is acetone based with an evaporation retarder and while not as mean as MEK it is your next best bet.

    The instant’s are only dissolved with NitroMethane. In reality that leaves you with mechanical methods ie a sharp scraper and or an angle grinder.

    I have no experience with non JBL conekits so I have no suggestions here.

    Have fun!

    Barry.

    OK, ordered from reconekits like the last time. But kit does not come with the mass ring. Before I start manhandling the old cone to get the ring out any suggestions?

    I know I could leave it off to make a 2234H but the foil says 2235H. The Speaker Exchange wants $85 for the thing.

    I write this after using acetone and MEK. Dremal with wire brush did better.

    I am writing my will just in case.

    Never mind. Glue used seemed to be brittle. Got a knife tip behind ring on each side of the split in the ring. Then applied a little pressure across the diameter with a long screwdriver and it popped out.

    What glue should I use to reinstall? The spider/surround glue?

    Hi Donald;

    I have used both the Moyen glue that comes in the JBL kits and instant adhesives on the mass rings. I have had the best success with LocTite #410. The trick is getting enough in there to get a full circle bond without any getting anywhere near the gap inside the coil former.

    Of you use an instant, use a “toughened” rubberized like 410 or Gorrilla brand. At least it’s not as brittle.

    On the prep side I use some abrasive and scratch up the insied of the voice coil former where the mass ring will reside before the cone goes in the basket. Experiment on the old one to get a feel for what this takes. The real issue is that this will be just a mechanical bond and Kapton is slick.

    Did you get a real JBL C8R2235 kit from them? If so, who stole the mass ring?

    Barry.

    Oh yeah, I use the Moyen on the surround and 410 on the spider and dust cap

    I ALWAYS test operate the driver before the ring goes in and again before the cap goes on.

    All the best!

    Did not get a JBL kit. Given what they want for the mass ring I hate to think what they would want for a real JBL kit. Plus I took the wording on the site to mean they don’t like to sell OEM kits to us hackers.

    The kit I did get came with Black Nitrile rubber cement. OK or should I get the 410?

    That correct as it voids the warranty of the recone kit.

    The problem in the overall market now is drivers are being re cycled on EBay with non OEM recones that may not have been installed correctly or worse in the wrong basket.

    For the diy person who wants to re produce an authentic classic vintage jbl system per stock factory design sourcing authentic drivers had become problematic.

    They won’t always know if the seller says jbl 2235 for sale.

    I have observed this situation on projects in the past 2 years and it’s a nightmare when you’re got the job of cleaning up a project.

    The system just won’t perform as desired and they won’t know why?

    It fucks the whole hobby for everyone.

    So if you decide to sell your drivers at some point sell it as a non oem recone

    That makes it easier for sure. Not like it’s a studio monitor that a slight change in voice would be an isssue.

    Real JBL kits for those are about $205. Mass rings aught to be about $8.50, $85‘s a joke.
