    Favorite woodhorn ?

A friend of mine asked me for the best sounding midrange horn I know of, but I havenīt listened to most of them yet and have to ask you guys.
I can call the westlake aka 2397 my own and really like it.
But he is looking for a possible crossover of aprox. 500-600hz.

The yuichi horn which seems to be a TAD copy came to my mind. Seems to be highly regarded and without any imperfection.

But I have found some pics of a Yamamoto wood horn that looks mighty impressive. 80cm (32") wide and 33cm (13") tall
    http://audio-heritage.jp/YAMAMOTO/unit/f280a.html
Any experience with this monster of a horn?

    Regards,
    Olaf

    Hi Ivica,

yes indeed, the yuichi seems to fit his demands.
But we where wondering if there is a bigger version of this around?
He was thinking of using a JBL 2482 with phenolic diaphragm to inshure safe use from 500hz or even below.
But yuichi "only" supports safe crossover from 600hz and above...

I know several people using JBL 2" drivers on TH-4001 crossed at 500Hz of even a bit lower. I had several time the opportunity to listen to JBL 2450 or 2446 in such a configuration. This is working well. Arai290 is a bit different but you should be able to do the same.

    Westlake horns

I know their are two different versions around, one has an internal height of aprox. 1,44" and the other should have 2".

I have build the smaller one which is very close to the JBL 2397. But Iīm interested in the bigger one.
Are there any construction plans of these westlakes with 2" inner height?
Or are these the exact same dimensions as the smaller one except for the height ?

How do they actual differ in sound?
Westlake only uses the bigger one to about 4,5khz, is itīs frequency extension to the highs worse than the smaller one which is capable of 10khz ?

Hi Guys, I came across this website, I’m actually thinking of building a 2397 clone, but this looks really cool, Kent

    Iwata

This horns should be quite intresting, and about the same size as the larger yamamoto
I have not listened to it myself. Only the smaller version from autotech, but I am sure it would aound wonderful with a decent driver and imo it looks beautiful

It is also large enough to give proper loading down to 500hz if the driver is up for it

Going lower is not always the answer

Diaphragm excursion goes up and so does distortion

The polar response of the horn can change significantly at the bottom end too making crossover behaviour unpredictable

500hz on the yuichi a290 could work, but I like the idea of doubling the cutoff for actual crossover (2*290hz= 580hz)... As Ian said, goin to low may introduce more problems than benefits. At small levels a 500hz crossover probaply works well thou...

Thatīs the reason my buddy was looking for a bigger wood-horn than yuichi...
The Iwata shure looks impressive I have to say!

    Hi,

but the horizontal dispersion a290 (with FINS) I would expect to be much, much more then Iwata horn type.

Isn't narrow dispersion a HF issue?

@Dr.db: Did you say anything about the high crossover point?

Here's a picture of an Iwata horn used from ~200Hz if I remember correctly: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbullet...l=1#post208877

I think, it's an heavy adapted Iwata 2" horn (in DIY) ....
Best, ask it to or musical friend "mafuta" or ... "JDZA" ...
    It's music .... I like it.

Thanks a lot for taking these pictures!
    Very impressive, indeed.

How do the yamamoto f280a actually compare to the yuichi 290 in sound?
    Which driver are you using?
