    L65 vs L100

    Both use the same woofer. Why can the L65 take (give?) more bass than the L100?

    I have both sets hooked up to a McIntosh speaker switcher so the input to them is coming from the same CD, pre-amp and amp trio.
    had L25,L36,L40,L120,L300,AquariusIV(2),S1,4408 have L65,L100,L222,DorianS12,B380

    L65 = 126A
    L65A = 122A
    L65B = 129H

    L100 = 123A-1
    L100A Century, and "Late" = 123A-3

    And, here we go... , the 123A-1 is Positive, as is the 126A (the latter from memory...).

    Never mind, nuthin', man. It gave me - for one - a chance to de-cobweb what I've worked through on those particular series, and to the credit of Giskard, there's now techsheets to support all our curiousity.

    Everyone benefits from curiosity...

    There is a difference in the bass tuning, because the one shown, being an early model, does not have the port tube used on the later ones. I don't know the effect on the tuning though. I would expect better bass with the tube though, otherwise why would they have bothered to change? I think that JBL advertising material said that the simpler crossovers on the later versions made for smoother response.

    I've got the original design, and being a fan of symmetrical arrays, I like it a lot. Still, it'd be nice to know the difference in tuning. Of course, I'm always a tad skeptical of anyone's advertising claims about an "improvement," but I'd like to hear informed opinions.
    Out.

    Yes, the L65 does have more low bass (20-40 Hz) than the L100. But, the L100 has more upper bass (60-120Hz).

    Also, the L100s without the tube, are tuned to about 38-40 Hz or so. The ones with the tube, are tuned to about 30 Hz. MUCH better response curve. The ones without the port tube have a BIG "hump" in the bass response (like, 2 to 3 dB top of-hump, centered at about 65 Hz). OTOH, the ones with the tube, only have about a 1 dB hump, and less "perceived bass overhang/boom" than the ones without the tube...

    Regards,
    Gordon.

    So, are there mods to tame the hump and extend the low end?

    It is my understanding you can install the curved port tube into the older ones and attain the same effect. At the very least you may have to enlarge the hole slightly.....I think you can still order the tubes, my L166 tubes appear to be the same exactly...perhaps........the curve in them is by designe and is to dampen the bass response and makes the enclosure appear acoustically larger to the driver.....
