    Does this sound right?

Had a friend look at my 2214h woofers today, he put a new spider in, attached the surround to the cone but before glueing the surround to the basket we noticed that the surround was about 1/8 or more raised above the basket. We were thinking that perhaps JBL used a cardboard spacer between the frame and the surround. If we do not use a spacer the cone will be pushed down as well as the spacer. I have been having problems with it bottoming out fairly easily and maybe at some point in the past someone had replaced the foam and did not use a spacer (if there is one).

Sounds like either the wrong cone, or the cone is glued too high up on the voice coil. There should be NO spacers between a 2214 surround and the basket.

One thing- is the surround glued ON THE FRONT of the cone, or ON THE REAR of the cone, like it SHOULD be? If the surround is not glued CORRECTLY ON THE REAR OF THE CONE, the situation you're experiencing will occur, without fail...

Did you guys look at the relationship between the installed voice coil height and the magnetic gap? There should be equal overhang between the front of the coil to the front of the magnet top plate, as there is between the rear of the coil to the back of the top plate. In a 2214, this will mean about 1/4" of the coil should be sticking up out of the gap, at rest. If it's much more or less than this, the woofer will distort, due to the non-symmetrical travel (ie, the voice coil will "run out" of the magnet on the outward travel at a DIFFERENT amount of excursion as it will run out in the inward direction). That's definitely not a situation you want!

    Regards,
    Gordon.

Surround is mounted behind the cone. The voice coil is very close to the cone, the windings I mean. In fact, I had asked about moving the coil higher up so it would'nt bottom out as easily but there is no room to do that.

I can't swear the cone is the wrong one, no way to tell as far as I know. It's a relatively "deep" cone compared to most other woofers.

    what's the roll?

there are different rolls, half roll, 3/4 and full. Maybe the foam itself is the problem.
