I have a spare pair of LE 85 drivers. Original diaphragms not likely. I am buying a pair of JBL 3677's (15"bass with compression driver&horn Cinema series) to use as side surround channels in a home theater with my three 4333 home built cabinet front speakers. Might mate well with the front (at least better than the Klipsch center and sides I had --fingers crossed). JBL designed them as minimal depth speakers to use behind small theater screens. At least I had a guy on one of the many forums who liked JBL sound and uses 3 of the3677's in front with wall hung 8340 sides and loves his setup. The 11 1/2 inch depth fills my side needs.
I do have a pair of 2345 horns but do not have enough side room to point them inward from the side walls and still have access to my seats! I figure I got the 3677's for less than I would need to spend on 15 inch JBL bass drivers and crossovers much less building a decent cabinet. Besides that, imagine one of those 2345 horns almost against your ear! The room is 13.5 ' wide and the couch 9' wide. That leaves about 24 inches on each side including that for an "isle-way" to get into the theater seats. It might be possible but not convenient or ideal to sort of hang them near the ceiling with horns tilted slightly forward toward the seating. I also have a single (feels aluminum) horn that arrived with on one of the LE85's I bought on ebay. It has a 14 1/2 by 3 1/2 inch throat opening, flat, flush mount front, flat sides and radial top and bottom and is 8 1/2 inches long. I never saw one but maybe a Hartfield horn shape but no lens. I intend to put the 3677's (about 11 1/2 inches deep versus over 20 inches for the LE85's with 2345 horns!) on each side, and maybe a foot or two forward of the side seats but do not have them yet so do not know if their mid range is compatible with the 4333's. If not, maybe I could use my LE85's with shorter horns like that 8 1/2 inch one if I could find a mate (no markings) instead of the internal compression drivers of the 3677's if they do not sound good with the front 4333s? I know I'm nuts but any thoughts? (Retired but obviously too much time on my hands I guess.)
