    midrange pot smoke

I have a friend in Mich. that just restored some L220's and he he is having problems with his midrange level adjustment pot smoking, at high power levels. I have told him about the contact cleaner thing and before that I told him to do the back and forth trick to maybe clean the wipers in the pot but it is past that point as Smoke is coming out now!. Does someone know if the tweeter level control pot from an L19 will work in it's place? I have a pair of crossovers from them and they look the same size but wonder about other factors. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks, Steve G

Replace the original 10285 L-Pads in the L220/L222 with the higher powered 58450 L-Pads if they haven't all ready been replaced.
Reference the tech sheets I've posted for these models.

Come on guys! You should have all this crap memorized by now!

I just skim these posts anymore so I missed this. Sorry!
No, the L19 used the low power 10285. It will cook in the L220/L222 under high power use.

Order a new 50 watt one from PE. That could be the cleaner burning off but if it's getting that hot up the wattage before you start a fire with the thing

    Thank you !

Thank you fella's, I will tell Mark to "cool" it on the wattage for now and send him the replacment #'s. BTW, these are the L220's that where up on ebay a while back and I told him to reconsider keeping them and refoam the drivers then LISTEN to them and then decide if you want to sell, He is SO happy with them! I also advised him on an power amp and preamp and he is very happy with his rig. I love this site!!!

I have linked him to this site and really want him to come into the fold. I've copied and pasted the supplied info onto my reply email so he can see what a wealth of knowledge is here for him too. Now we gotsta get some horns in those babies, Thanks again and I'll keep you posted, Steve.

Steve: Consider some of the newer horns and "waveguides" being discussed in other threads here. Cheap and worth a shot, maybe, not having to blow out the rear, there....

    - Did your friend use WD-40 , by any chance ? ( It's an extremely light machine oil - "might smoke" )

    - The L220 & L220(a) , both use 8 ohm Lpads. Parts Express sells a bunch of different Lpads ( 8 & 16 ohm ) here.

    - When ordering these parts - a person needs to pay attention to the available shaft length as well as the threaded collar length ( among the more mundane power handling spec. ).

    regards <. Earl K

PS ; do what Rob and Giskard said .

    Is it just me...

Was I the only one who was expecting an entirely different discussion?

At least I have your attention

I'll let you know if I run into any "hi-range" pot smoke

I think I may have run into that before

    I think that's a good thing but I can't remember exactly...

    Thank you all

Here is a pic of the smoked pot, Mark was able to find the right replacement thanks to the info supplied from the generous members of this site.

    Happy Camper

Here is Mark's new system powered by his recently acquired Yamaha MX-1000u and C70 preamp. He is in Hog Heaven.
