    Price range??

    I've used $50 DACs that worked just fine for that purpose.

    I've used many of these;
    GTV-DD-2-AA, which is what you would need for surround sound decoding on another AVR or preamp, which the Adcom is not of course.

    I know the gtp had a dac conversion, im now not sure if it can be used with 2 other pres in surround. The adcom has pre outs for all channels 5.1, my thinking was pre out from the two press to the adcom in a chain & pre out from the adcom to the two amps don't cha know

    My old Denon AVR 2105 (from 2004 or thereabouts) does not have HDMI,
    tried to use 3 wire component i/p's without much joy.
    But had a look and it does have 2 digital optical -Toslink- inputs. No need
    for a separate DAC.

    Components even from before 2000 had those inputs. Take a look at the back panel.

    My HT solution was changing my view of a HT system. The AVR is no longer the hub of the whole thing .... Smart TV now is.
