    Substitute for JBL 2123

I am looking at the alternatives to the JBL 2123. I cross from JBL 2245 at 260Hz now then on at 800Hz to JBL 2450 on E-JMLC 300 horns. I want to cross at 160Hz and 800Hz.

Although the modern JBL drivers would do the job the cost here in the UK is out of my reach.

Looking at units like Beyma 15P80ND or Precision Devices PD158.

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

JBL 2220. With a good sub (as you have) these are magic. Everything I love about 2123's, just bigger. Under hung coil in a thick top plate, super light curvelinear cone and very high efficiency.

Over here they are everywhere and inexpensive. Just be sure they are proper 2220 as they don't share motor, cone or coil with other JBL 15's. Many have been reconed with 2225 kits.

    All the best,
    Barry.
If we knew what the hell we were doing, we wouldn't call it research would we.

Would a 2118 fit in right there ?
$60 a pair on eBay all day long and they seem to be unloved 8" drivers while I think they have a great potential as a lower midrange driver

Thanks Lee the consensus seems to be to go up to a 12" or 15" and looking at the response curves on some of the larger drivers that seems right.
What I would really like is one of the modern drivers I think they would sound fantastic between the JBL2245s and JBL 2450s.
Just need someone in Europe to offer them to me at the right price!

The 2123 should have no problem keeping up with th 2245, and a crossover in the 200/300Hz range should sound good if:
    a) the crossover is properly done (ie asymmetrical electrical slopes and EQ to get symmetrical complementary and phase coherent acoustical targets)
    b) the 2245 is not too close to the floor (to avoid triggering the vertical mode of the room which will likely be right in its upper range)
    c) the 2123 has a large enough baffle (to avoid having a baffle step kicking right into the crossover region)

Changing driver will not solve these problems by itself

My friend with a pair of JBL 2350s reckons my system sounds very good.

Thanks for the advice I have received but I think its time for me to get some proper measurements so I can identify any actual rather than perceived problem.

I may try and find someone locally that has the appropriate equipment and software if only to teach me how to do it and interpret the results.

Ive been reluctant to go this route as it opens up a a whole new can of worms, we shall see.

    Thanks again

    Dave
