    4311B stands height

    Hello everybody,

I am finally planning to give my old 4311B (bought them when I was 14-15...) a decent positioning and as such am looking for ideas to build a pair of stands, what I need to know is what those of you who already know these speakers which is the ideal height off the floor and if you think they would do better with lower stands (in the 12" range) upside down (with mid and tweeter up and woofer down) or on, say, 20" stands in their natural (with mid and high controls down) position?

    Thank you

    Giovanni

    Ciao Giovanni
I Just sold a pair of 4311B to a best friend in Italy, and I suggest him to use the loudspeakers with the woofer below, to have a better image and to place on the bottom some wood block coming from a Three or even several Books (to have a kind of "design" modern looking) around 35-40cm!

for sure as much as you increase the height, bass will become more precise but less deep.

    Ciao Berga,

am back to ask further questions :-) I got in possession of a new, for me, preamp and a so long lusted turntable and as such am again playing with my vintage stuff, I did turn the speakers upside down and slide couple books below the cabinets, I gotta say it is totally different with the tweeter and midrange a little higher but this was expected, now I am in the process of picking a design to build the stands, I was thinking of a design similar to the Sonus Faber ones I yesterday saw at a friend's place, a stone base with same dimension as the speaker base, wood stands (there are 5 2cm wide, 12 cm deep and almost 40cm high) and a wood base at the top where to lay the loudspeaker, I think that lifting them 40-50cm off the floor will be enough and take the sound off the speakers finally.

I already noticed the bass changing, it is less controlled than how it is in the regular position but once I get the stands I will just experiment to check which position does it better.

Yesterday I noticed the sound stage of my friend's setup being incredible, the music comes from behind the speakers even though there is maybe a meter or so distance between speakers and wall, I know the 4311B being a different kind of speaker compared to my friend's Sonus Faber (and also a totally different target/budget) but I was wondering if I would also get a deep soundstage or if, as I read somewhere, the 4311B being monitor speakers project the stage just in front of them. I have no much space off the rear wall and also the corners are quite close at a meter or so from each speaker...

I think some day i will have to move the 4311 somewhere else and get a couple of smaller speakers, the apartment is too small even for my old and beloved ones but I dunno if I can give up their bass ;-)

Thank you so much for your hints!!!

Placing the woofer on top can help lower boominess by reducing interaction with the floor.

Have read that the 4311b were designed to be placed on a control console bridge hence the low mounted HF would be at about ear level , so on flat floor stands the highs are somewhat lost.

aiming them upwards helps , but LF on bottom and still aimed up is theoretically the best option.

try it yourself and decide ... costs nothing to experiment.

It took a while but finally settled on designed. also tried different height stands , 20 inch seemed to work best for me. YMMV.

    Hallo,

I am planning something in the 16-20" height, I have seen so many designs and am so confused, probably it will be a three or four legged like, these things are quite big and heavy and am freaking because with the actual setup (3 inches off the floor on some books and tweeter/midrange towards the top) I can't really discern the sound stage, I mean, I can locate the singer position but instruments are quite confused, maybe I should look for some better recorded music (at this moment I am playing music in FLAC from my MacBookAir but I don't have much and the CD player is broken ), I hope raising the speakers off the floor will make things better and, by the way, I have seen some dedicated stands which position the speakers like you said, slightly bent towards the back.

Thank you all for your input, if you have some design to suggest please go ahead, I am going to the carpenter next week to finalize a design.

I have a pair of 4312's that I listened to for while and I placed them on Sound Anchors http://soundanchors.com/products/2043/3-post-stands stands that I have kicking around. I'll measure them when I find my tape measure, but they were about 18 to 20 inches off the floor. I'm not an expert and maybe I lost some bass by using speaker stands that high, but, I loved the sound. I could zero them in for perfect imaging and for the type of music I like, they sounded wonderful. I think you are on the right track getting them off the floor so you can enjoy that nice warm mid range /mid bass sound.

Back in the days, Ikea used to supply speaker stands. They worked well and they were dirt cheap. They helped decouple the cabinets from the floor, and offer tilting.

What did you finally decide on doing, my friend? My 4311b monitors are for studio use, and I made heavy oak and birch cabinet stands for each with thick granite tops. Decoupling between the monitors and granite are via four 2" square dense foam squares adhered at the bottom corners of each monitor. It is 34-1/2" to the top of the granite, which places the tweeters at ear level when I am seated in the mixing position. The monitors form an equilateral triangle (equal distances) with my head at the apex, so 60-degree angles. Puts me in the sweet spot. Good luck, Giovanni!

But,but .... I just picked up some 4312's. Control monitors too , abt same layout as the 4311b's.

BUT they have the conventional layout of LF on the bottom.

Were they built with 2 different layouts so that the buyer had a choice OR was the 4312 an evolutionary change to the 4311 ?

I rather like the pots on top better ...

I am not a 4311/4312 specialist but my take is that the 4311 was a studio monitor but that the 4312 (and its versions) was a revival aimed at home use. Hence probably the more conventional layout. I might be very wrong too ;-)
