    driver upgrade for B460 subwoofer?

I love my B460 with the 2245. However, I can't help but wonder if dropping in a new driver would improve the performance....not that the 2245 has any problem rattling the windows. This really is more of a curiosity thing more than a real need to address a performance problem. Also an upgrade would allow me to put the 2245 on the shelf and not trash it when the aliens blow up the spaceship. Drop in replacement only...no mods to the B460.

The 2258 keeps popping up used at reasonable prices...does not appear to offer more x-max but I suspect it would be harder to damage than 2245.

The 2268 is listed as 23mm x-max but internet wisdom says that is really x-mech.

The 2269 does have higher x-max...and ~3x the price of the 2268. This one looks like a winner except for price.

I'll eventually get around to modelling this stuff.

Any other drivers to consider? Any thoughts on taking a frame and creating a franken driver to get Fs closer to 20Hz?

    Thanks!

    Don

What characteristic of the performance do you wish to improve? Low frequency response (you mention 20Hz), efficiency, output?

Hi Don, I made an inquiry from another member since I was also asking this question about the 2269. It's mounting depth is 310mm so it should fit the B460. I couldn't find it in literature anywhere, fortunately someone knew

I also found a place that sells them at $826 new, still not cheap. PM me offline and I'll send you a link.

Higher output 20-50Hz at lower distortion would be the goal. I expect to lose efficiency.

I didn't even think about that. Good thing it should fit. I think I know what my christmas present will be.

    Hi Don,

Owing to the JBL data, 2269 can be used, but I think it is less efficient then 2245. May be cheaper solution, with a kind of LF EQ in home listening application is 2242, but I have no idea about its sound charter.

May be JBL Tech.note 34. Vol.1 can give some ideas.
And some light over 2242 vs 2245 can be seen in Techn.note 22.
