Smile Question Regarding 4410, 4411 & 4412 for Near Field Listening.

I love JBLs. My first were a pair of 4311wx that I still have. A friend installed the Zilch modes for better sound and I've been using them with my computer for 6 or 7 years now. They are 36 inches apart, 27" iMac between them and they are 36 inches from me seated in front of the computer. I have a McIntosh 1700 driving them. For the most part I am happy with them, but some songs don't sound that great. I would like to upgrade. I have been reading up on the 4410, 4411, and 4412, all of which are considered to be an substantial upgrade from the 4311 I currently use. I am a sucker for the white woofer cones, so the 4411 stands out. However, I've read that both the 4411 and 4412 should be place horizontally for best results. In the space on my desk, vertical works better for me. The 4410 is vertical.

Considering I am using these speakers 36" from my head and that they will be strictly near field, would the 4410 be my best choice?
I currently use L112 as my main, L96 in the bedroom, L100 Century in the garage and 4401 sometimes instead of the 4311.
I am a sucker for those white woofer cones!!!!! Based on appearance alone I am leaning to the 4411, but maybe the 4410 makes more sense?
I do want to upgrade and there is a pair of 4410 about 150 miles from me. For me that's within driving distance.

Ok, I'm done with the rambling. Any opinions would be appreciated!!!!

White woofer cones, 3-way with "modern" tweeters, vertical orientation? Sounds to me like you should be looking for more L112 or L96 Deltas. My L112a have been used vertically for over 30-years and my L96s for many years, too. For that matter, my 4412As have been used vertically for many years. Sound just fine to me.

    Thanks for the reply!

I've tried the L112 and the L96 for near field and the 4311 are more efficient. I'm looking for an improved mid and tweet while being able to hear the full range of the music at a lower volume. That's why I'm looking for another studio monitor.

I appreciate you letting me know that you like your 4412 vertically. I've read that they should be placed horizontally.

Some say they like the 4410 more and some like the 4412 more. Decisions, decisions.
I guess it comes down to finding them at a good price and in good condition.

    4410

    Hello Ron, and greetings from the Democratic Peoples Republic of Washington State;

I have the 4410's and like them a lot. They are a very neutral speaker and are good for most reproduction. I listen to mine at about 10 feet for mostly classical music and movies ( I use 3 in front). As for using them at 36"......?.also you might find that after the rather forward 4311, to be a bit dull. Until you get used to them. Speakers are, as you know, a very personal thing. Are you using them as a monitoring tool, or for critical listening. Our late colleague John Eargle used them both ( the 4410 and 4412 ) when he recorded the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

Hello Ed and Greetings to you from the armpit of America, which is of course, North Carolina!

Yes, 36 inches! I mean nearfield! I figure using studio monitors for desktop listening would be the way to go.
As far as my purpose, it's just for enjoyment. I'm looking for quality sound that's pleasant and non fatiguing.
I am 46 years old in September and my ears are far from golden, but a nice tone and good imaging would be nice.
I am leaning towards those 4410.

I'd vote for the 4410 also. i think they were designed as a nearfield monitor.
The vertical orientation makes a better image in close listening.

They are NOT fun, warm or fuzzy. many describe them as clinical , surgical
or not really cold, but neutral. At first listen you may think they have little bass,
but the bass is there WHEN IT'S ACTUALLY IN THE SOURCE MATERIAL. In other
words..they are honest to a fault. I found the bass tight , mids were right on and
the 035Ti is a proven , widely utilized driver. (easy to replace if ever needed).

Their biggest fault is the grilles. The damn posts break too easily.

Only reason that I sold them is lack of areas in the house needing more speakers ..

Seawolf, your description sounds exactly like what I'm looking for in speakers.
Mids that are right on is what I want that I'm not getting in the 4311.

In my opinion the only reason the 4410's are preferred is because of the vertical alignment.

The 128h in 4412 does everything better than the 127-h1 in the 4410.

I would tend to agree. I own L96 and L80T/3 so I'm familiar with the 10-inch three-ways. I also own L112 and 4412A. Most complaints about the 12s over the 10s can be attended to by proper placement off the floor for the 12s as the 128H-1 tends to pick up a lot of boundary reinforcement to which the 10-inch doesn't seem to be as susceptible.

I doubt I'd choose either for near-field use at 36-inches since the cabinet size between the 4410 and 4412 is insignificant thus the spread of the drivers over the baffle is really about the same, too. JBL makes a wonderful solution for near-field use and it's the LSR305, which I also own. For $225/pair including amps, it's a real bargain. Another that works well for me has been the Pro-III Plus, small monitors with a sub. Paid $40 for my set and they are among my best JBL finds. Neither has white woofers though!

Heck, if anything, you might think the driver array on the 4412 would actually prove to be more compact and beneficial used vertically than that of the 4410 from 36-inches.

    Have you owned both , 4410 & 4412

I have, and find your statement somewhat lacking merit.

    Yes, I have.

How is it lacking merit? Explain to me the differences between the two systems? Do they use radically different components? No.........

The 127H-1 does nothing better than the 128H. Thats a fact. The 128H may be a little trickier is find its optimal position in the room but otherwise its better.

If you think the 4412 is too boomy or has muddy bass you haven't got them in the right spot.

BMWCCA, thanks for the tip on the JBL LSR305! I'm going to give them a try.
However, I am also stoked to find the 4412, 4410 or the 4411 for that matter.
Whichever I can find first. I do appreciate everyone chiming in with their experiences.
Practical application experiences count. Thanks for all the experiences so far.

    Lsr 6332

I'm going to throw my vote for a more contemporary speaker, the LSR 6332 or their older cousin the LSR 32. These are very accurate and articulate. Great for critical listening. My listening post is about 7 feet though. The base can be a problem even a foot or so off of the ground. In my case, I use a DSP to correct the base response. Don't know why these guys aren't that popular. They will tell the quality of your front end equipment. Good converters and good amplification can have an impact on the sound quality. The sound is accurate and realistic. Imaging is top notch. These are the replacements for the 4412s or the L100, though flat black. No veneer. The build quality is classic JBL. Actually, I think JBL out did themselves in the build quality department with these guys!

    Regards,

    John

I must have missed the part about the OP having a $3000 budget!
