Hi, a friend mailed this thread to me, so after reading it, I thought I should reply.
Andrew was at my home June 24th. I have a big meeting there every June. He was supposed to be here two years ago, but his leaving TAD because of Pioneer's problems, forestalled that. But, when I saw him during Axpona, this year, he apologized, and said he would come this year. He affirmed during T.H.E Show in California. He brought the UB5. Well, actually, he took them back from Steve Gutenberg, who was reviewing them. I then got a call from Steve. Oh, well.
To the relevant part. Right now, the Uni-fi line are the top models in Andrew's line. but, he will be introducing new models during CES, in January. As he told me, the monitor will cost between $2,000 and $2,500 a pair. There will be, if they are ready, a floor standing model as well, and possibly a new center channel. Hopefully, his amplifier will be ready before then. With the higher pricing, he will be able to offer much new, and advanced technology. As he told us, with his less expensive lines out now, a $2 difference in woofer cones is a big deal.
I've known Andrew for a number of years. His interest in producing inexpensive, and moderately priced speakers is a priority for him. His $90 and $140 speakers designed for Pioneer sold well in excess of 200,000 units, at a total dollar value of $50 million, showing that a high demand for high quality, inexpensive speakers exists.
So far, I've had 7 calls from people in my group who are buying the UB5s, including myself, that's at least 8 that I know of. Those are the ones who called me because they didn't know where to buy them. These are amazing speakers. They give up little. I will try to get a pair of the new model to listen to after CES.
Thanks melgross, a friend of a friend who went to Munich told me it was designed by Jones. Now I know the truth. That bloody liar, I gonna bash and hung him with a big fat 12awg phone line.
Have to remember that Andrew is running the American branch, which is new, and built around him specifically, which is why it's called "ELAC by Andrew Jones".
He's got his hands full here. I can't see him doing work for the European ELAC as well. I'll ask, but it's highly doubtful.
Is it just me, or does anyone else find them to be grotesque? Could pass for a trimmed-down, updated, period acceptable british phone booth/time machine/trans-dimensional jitney, as owned and operated by the Whoster himself. Please excuse my artistic naivete', but... Raaaaaaalph !
Everyting else about them I like, and the price is right (or was that $2500 for a pair of stands?)
Apologetically, -d_e-
