New JBL mid-driver 2164, impressive claims, any info?

    There's a new mid-driver from JBL, the 2164.
It is a 4" cone unit used in the VTX20 (smaller) Horn Loaded Line Arrays.
Seems to be a carefully developed unit, subject of a patent and an AES convention paper by Alex Voishvillo.
As is now usual for JBL product developed for internal use, there's not much info at the JBL Pro website.
Anyone have any information on it?
Or a copy of the convention paper, allowed by the AES for presentations not in the Journal I believe.

    Hello!

I have a copy of the AES paper and the patent ... i can probably get you copies, if you're still interested

But I'm still looking for all of the actual specs from JBL, for this specific driver ...

With the knowledge of the patent number it can be printed legally-

The correct US patent number for the 2164H (corresponding to the AES paper) is : 9,100,738

    Thank you Peter,
This appears to be a new application that follows on from the patent that "Werewolf" quoted.
So, very relevant even if not the exact one listed in the AES paper.
And thanks to "Werewolf" for his information too.

    Best wishes
    David.

Just for the record, learned that the 2164 has been joined by the 2165, an even more powerful, dual voice coil 5.5" mid.
Very little data except used in the current JBL top-of-the-line tour system, horn loaded of course.
Total overkill for a home system, so I expect someone will be interested

There's increasing evidence to suggest that the new 2107H (6.5" enclosed midrange) uses a motor very similar to the 2164H ... food for thought

    Any more information available?
It looks to use the frame/thermal structure in the patent Peter posted.
Not sure if it uses the voice coil/magnetic structure in the patent you posted.

I know that the 2107H has a copper cap on the pole piece (because i saw it, in a JBL video!) ... similar, perhaps, to the 2164H. And i know the dimensions of the 2107H (because i just bought a couple!) ...

Now you have some you could pull one apart and have a look yourself
I noticed, as I searched around, that JBL have patented (and presumably use) 2164-type pole pieces on Dual Coil Drivers.
The 2165 seems a likely candidate, maybe the product info would have Patent numbers.

In the patent posted by Peter (above):

Figure 2 is a very good cross-section of the 2106H (including aluminum flux stabilization ring, but no copper on the pole for separate inductance control).

Figures 3 and 5 are very good cross sections of the 2107H (including flux stabilization ring, plus copper cap on the pole for separate inductance control).

I have probably found a little more information about the 2164 and the latter development 2165.
There's a couple of AES convention papers by Alex Voishvillo that are later than the one mentioned earlier.
If you, or others, are still interested, they are #9414 and #9162
    http://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=17485
    and
    http://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=17971
The second one looks like a comparison of a 2164 type driver to a 2165.

    Best wishes
    David
