    2122 vs 2123

I can get my E110 baskets reconed to 2122's but the price is a little high. I can get 2123H's pretty reasonably. I am going to use them in the 4345 clones I am going to build, what's the best way to proceed?

The 2123 has a rising response curve use the 4344MK2 network instead on the stock 4344/45 network. Rob

To Re-cone or not to Re-cone.

A couple of weekend ago I received a pair of compression drivers. The boxes they came in were no longer square more the shape of a soccer ball. Needless to say I had to ensure the drivers were not damaged so I swapped out the CDs in my 4344s and tested them - all was well (whew!). Thankfully the shipper had double boxed the drivers with the inner box wrapped in 3” of bubble paper.

I also have a pair of E110s which I had re-coned to 2123H about six months ago but never tested. So I swapped them. I was gobsmacked as to how much better the sound was it was like having a new pair of speakers. The coherence between the 2235/2123/2002 was just astounding. (The CDs I was testing were the same as the ones I pulled out so they had no impact on the sound.)

While I was testing them I played a song my wife happens to like, she came in to the room sat down commented on how much better the sound was. She stayed for an hour and a half which was amazing as she has never cared for the 4344s. When she go up to leave she made the comment “well, well, well they are getting closer to the K2s”.

So if I were you I’d seriously consider using the E110 baskets with a fresh set of re-cones. Just because you can get 2123s on the cheap doesn’t necessarily mean in the long run it’s the best option. Besides who knows how long new parts will be available.
