Hello,

When I ran across a pair of 4530 with 2220A and 2420/2345 I just couldn't help myself, I had to get them. I always thought it would be a fun system to try out and since my current computer speakers (4425) are on the small side, the 4530 would be perfect



When I first tried them out at my office I figured, that cant be. The system Ive longed for for so long cant be this bad. Both the mid and the lows were just awful. I figured that the cross over must be the issue and although it is a little bit on the upper side for my taste, crossing at 1200Hz I still didn't think It would be to blame. I lived with them a few days and thought I could try with a different set of woofers. I mounted a pair of 2135 I had lying around and all of a sudden all the issues I had experienced were blown away. The bass is tight as a fist, although not very low(but I knew it wouldn't be) and the mids are now crisp and goes along very well with the horn.

I had a look at the 2220A woofers and when comparing them with others that I currently hold for a friend I found some differences. The original 2220A cone isn't all that smooth, there are small dimples all over but mine were very smooth. There is a stamped "21057" on the back of the cone which I believe is the d/k/e130 cone? The 2220 being an under hung construction I believe that the 21057 cone doesn't work very well in the 2220A basket? Due to the dust cap being black I didn't suspect anything when I picked them up.

Googling it it should be a D130 cone. Should not fit the 2220A. Try also with a working 2220 pair.

The cabinets are definitely very well made. Original JBL?
May I suggest you try a digital crossover and two amps. That will allow you to fine tune the sound.

Funny, I've heard the 2220 I'd the best driver for these scoop. Though I've never heard them myself. Makes me wonder if yours have seen to many miles.

placing the speaker in the room corner, may be would enhance LF range.

When discussing scoops with our mutual friend Blomman, he says the Fs should be high and the Q not too low. I agree. Low Q is good for increased bandwidth upwards, but in a scoop you want the driver to do the mid duty through direct radiation.

High fs is because it is only the horn loading the driver. With a low fs driver the cone will travel uncontrolled below the horn fs.

Based on this logic I would rank the drivers this way:

If the definition of "original" in this case means, made by professional carpenters by JBL original specs then yes. The cabs are very well made. I think the metal frame is some kind of a add on. They have been suspended in the ceiling in a small hockey stadium for most of the time if Im to believe the seller.

I have a pair of active crossovers to try out. I have a pair of 2350 horns with 2482 drivers I will try with an additional 075. I think that could work out well. Although the current configuration is a blast to listen to. The tweeking will be for a rainy day...

Yes, I also think the 2220 would be perfect. I think these woofers have been reconed with the wrong cone unfortunately.

Thanks Ivicia, I know that would make them roll of a little bit lower. I might have to rearrange a few stacks of book keeping in order to try it out though

The 2135 does do the job very good. A killer to try out would be the E145 if I ever could get a hand on a pair.
